I need help with a wired network

do i need to have a router in order to connect my tivo to my computer so that it can transfer shows and download listings?

no, the router would be to access the internet via multiple hosts

a switch or hub would work fine, even a crossover cable, you just need to put them both on the same subnet (192.168.0.1 for the PC and 192.168.0.2 for the tivo)

can i transfer shows wirelessly if i dont have a wireless internet connection?

According to these instructions, yes.

Edit: Sorry I may have misread your original question. I thought you were trying to connect two Tivos. Check around on Tivo's site to see if you can find the info you need.
By the way what is the model number of your Tivo?

Yes, you need a router. It's true that a router is only needed to access the Internet from multiple hosts, but the OP said that he wants to download listings to his TiVo (that's one host) and unless he has a broadband connection and doesn't want his computer to access the Internet, his computer is host 2.

Some (most?) routers contain a built-in switch.
