Humax DVD to Series3

I am thinking about buying a Humax Tivo with a DVD Recorder they have at BestBuy. If I have read correctly, would I be able buy the Humax DVD-R with Tivo, buy the $299 lifetime subscription that is offered on the box, and then transfer that service to a Series3 HD Tivo for $199 one time fee?

You're 100% correct. As long as the Humax DVD unit has no activation history on it, you can get lifetime. And you can transfer that to a Series3.

Correct. You will need to do it this month though. You will also get 12 months of support on the Humax as part of the lifetime transfer, which based on the new pricing, is a pretty good deal.
