How to get good audio from S3?
I have my S3 hooked up to my Sony XBR2 via HDMI. Then, I have analog RCA plugs going from my TV to my amp. My amp does not support HDMI but it has coax and optical digital connections.
Do I have everything hooked up the best I can with my setup or can I get digital audio somehow?
I just got a HD-DVD player for my 360 and have that hooked directly into my amp via optical and it has great sound.

You have already answered your own question: Just hook up an optical cable from the S3 to the AV receiver and you get the best sound (dolby digital).

Agreed...optical is your best bet for outstanding sound. I have it hooked up from both my S3 and my DVD player to my Onkyo 6.1 receiver. Love it.

Oh, didn't realize that the S3 had an optical connection. Guess it's back to monoprice for me to order more cables...

Can you do HDMI audio into your TV and optical digital out to your amp?

If you mean optical digital out from the TV carrying the audio fwd from the HDMI, then usually no. At least my TV does not support that.

Others have had more luck...

On the other hand, you can have both HDMI into the TV and optical out from S3 to receiver no problem.

Ok, so I hooked up my optical digital cable from my S3 to my amp. Problem now is the audio coming out the speakers all the time now; even when the TV is turned off. How do you deal with this?
And, I'm watching Riddick that I recorded and notice the video is slightly lagging behind the audio.

Well, I set up my S3 remote so it can mute my receiver. So, I guess I have to mute/unmute and turn TV power off/on as my normal TV viewing process.

Kidding aside, why mute it and not just turn it off?
I've heard others complain about the video lagging the audio. Something to do with the time it takes for their TVs to process the video. Not sure the solution.
Do you see it for everything or just one show? I've had unsynchronized audio once with an episode of Daybreak. Hasn't happened since.

The video lagging the audio problem can occur by
1. LCD televisions with relatively slow circuits.
2. Other video processing in scalers or receivers.
Many modern receivers have delay settings which you can manipulate to sync the sound and picture again.

It's on a Sony XBR2 70" TV which is not LCD.
It only lags on an occasional program; not most. My amp doesn't have a delay adjuster. Plus, I don't think it'd work too well since it happens infrequently.

When you say 'infrequently' do you mean only on certain programs or on certain channels all the time? If it's just occasional programs it might be a network issue.

I've seen it on a few recordings I've recorded of HDTV channels. Namely, the Conan O'Brien show and The Chronicles of Riddick.

B.S. I have used TiVo since Series I.
My Series I and IIs NEVER got out of audio/video sync.
My Series 3 has 50% of the time.
The only thing that changed is my S3.
I am still using SD on an SD TV.

want anyones suggestions regarding setting up my Series 3 with my Bose Lifestyle 48 and Sony 46 in XBR2. From what I gather in this thread, I should hook up HDMI from Series 3 to the Sony LCD, then use the digital optical audio output from the TV into the optical jack on the Bose (although the optical "in" does not correspond to the "audio in" for "aux" "cab/sat" "vcr" or "tv" which are only component red and white cables--- i'll have to research how the bose recognized where the optical in is coming from.
will this set up minimize the audio/video lag? I figure that if the audio came from the Series 3 straight to the reciever, that this could be a set up for the lag.

Step 0: Sell that Bose system - you are abusing well-recorded music and soundtrack with grossly inaccurate reproduction
Step1: HDMI to TV from S3. Optical to Bose (or replacement) HT system from S3.
Step2: ...
Step3: Profit!
If you lack a sense of humor, Step 1 is all you should read.
