how much will the S3 cost in 18 months?

take your best guess. I'm talking about the lowest price (with rebates and such) for a new S3 HDTiVo right before the 2008 summer Olympics...

I sure hope it's a lot of money, or else I'll feel even worse -- if I DO end up being reeled in by the lifetime transfer option. They've definitely succeeded at making it very very tempting.

too bad the polling is anonymous...it would be fun to look at this thread in the spring/early summer of 2008 and see who picked the right dollar range...

for the record, I picked the $300-$400 range

it looks I'm in the minority so far because most people think it will still cost more than $400 at that time...

Its the whole supply/demand thing. Prices will stay rather high for a while. At the same time Comcast will probably raise their prices a couple of times over the same time span to cover the "extra costs" they incur because of increased cable card usage.

I picked over $600. In 2007 we will see it drop by $100, then maybe another $50 at the end of the year. Then they will decide to hike the subscription costs again and ride the wave of all the new HDTV users buying for Christmas who want Tivo service.

Then we get a wave of new users here asking why the HD Tivo is so expensive when they can get Tivo software from their Cable Company...

Then in summer 2008 another $50 reduction, bringing the cost to $599 but with taxes and / or shipping you're looking at more than $600 to get in the door.

and that's exactly why I think they will bring the price down a lot more than to just under $600 by summer 2008...

Exactly $648.73 shipped to my door with a $10 dollar rebate yet to be claimed.

But didn't someone post on one of the other threads that went on for a zillion pages that the cost to a dealer/whatever was $500. Kinda hard to sell $500 cost for under that. Going out of business sale maybe?

it's already down to $649.99 and it's not even 2007 yet...

Considering that I just paid $510 from Dell before Xmas, a $200 drop does not seem out of the question...

since I just bought one for 1250.00 with Lifetime my guess would be the price will drop to 300.00 for the box in a month and then they'll bring back the Lifetime sub for 350.00 about a week later.

I have the worst luck when it comes to buying items right before price drops. if a store has a 30 day price guarantee the price will drop on day 31 for me.

I have to say, the price is not dropping as fast as I hoped (even with the current $599 shipped deal from costco.com).

However, I am still fairly confident that by the time I make the switch to HD for next year's Summer Olympics, the S3 can be had for under $400...

THX devices generally maintain high $$$, and I expect Tivo will have to release a cheap-o non-THX version to go under $400.

They've said as much at CES or during an earning call or something. We'll see if/when/how much...

There is supposed to be a scaled down 'mass market' version coming this fall right?

So I guess the Series 3 will never be under $500.

Exactly. I think the right answer for this poll would be that in 18 months the S3 will no longer be for sale. I'm not sure Tivo can afford the cost of promoting, stocking, and selling 2 different HD DVR's when the current S3 hardly sells now.

I think Tivo and the cable companies will make a deal and Tivo will replace the current boxes with S3 and a S2 DT, but with both tuners able to do digital.

It was $499 last month on a Tivo promotion, IIRC.

They seem to have done alright with 2 SD DVR's for a while now, so hopefully they'll be able to handle selling 4 different items.

I voted under $300, but I think that's just wishful thinking.

The last time I checked they were phasing out the single tuner because carrying two different SD DVR's didn't make any sense to them.

I thought that it was because they couldn't sell the S2ST with its OTA tuners anymore.

And yet they haven't introduced a new single tuner SD without OTA.

Either that, or huge closeout sale due to SDV adaption and/or release of new cheaper model.

Convert $100 to Euros, wait 18 months, convert the Euros back to dollars and have enough money to buy the S3 and retire

The HD market is a little more segmented - there isn't any reason to sell a single tuner DVR when all of the competition is dual tuner.

However, having a "high end" product that they can charge more for and a "low end" product to compete with the cable companies offerings makes sense.

I agree with you 100% if the high end market turns out to be big enough to justify the effort involved in also producing, selling, etc. a high end dvr. Today that seems to be pretty questionable.
