Question Mounting TiVo disk on laptop?

I've just got a nice new disk and would like to back it up before doing ANYTHING. Well done me. I have two computers - my 'home' computer (large beast lurking under a desk) and a work laptop. Home computer is a PITA to plug the disk into and boot into Linux - we're talking sweating, dust and cursing!

I'm wondering if anyone has ever used a USB disk - an external caddy to hold a disk - to mount the TiVo drive? Is there anything special you have to add to the mfstools CD? If I could do this, I could use the laptop.

I've searched the forums here to no avail, and thought I would ask before going googling.

I don't think anybody has managed to use MFSTools via USB.... yet.

Having only a laptop is a common reason why people buy preconfigured drives in the first place

I'm sure your supplier would send you a link to a backup if you needed one

My supplier is obviously very good with the aftercare, which I appreciate.

What you need to find out is if the Linux build on the MFSTools disk has drivers for USB mounted disks. Since it's a minimal setup I somehow doubt it would have these - buit I'm not 100% sure.

Even if it did have these drivers, I'm not sure the MFS software would be able to address the disk to the level needed to create a TiVo build.
