Tivo Rewards - iPods

I'm an iPod luddite (but not an MP3 player luddite, though).

What are the fundamental differences between the two iPods currently available as Tivo Rewards:

1 - APPLEŽ VIDEO IPODŽ - 60GB BLACK
2 - APPLEŽ IPOD - 60GB W/COLOR DISPLAY

Can #2 not play videos, and if not, why not? Besides the colors (black/white), is that the only difference? Also, are either one or both of these the super-thin iPods I've seen lately, or are they the older, thicker iPods? (I don't know all the iPod "generation" stuff).

And is the Video iPod really work an extra 15,000 reward points? I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be using it to watch many videos.

thanks.

I'll bet it is the difference between the black and white version and that's it.

Also, in general if I want something enough. I won't try to win it this way, I'll just go out and buyt it (and I already own the black, 60G, video iPod). $300.00 just isn't that much money.

I agree it's not that much money, but I have 50,000 points, and 20,000 expire on 12/31. So I'd like to spend them rather than lose them, and the iPod is the only really compelling reward offered (for me).

The 40k one, "APPLEŽ IPOD - 60GB W/COLOR DISPLAY" is a Photo iPod, and cannot play video. You might have heard this one called a "4G" iPod (from 2004).

The 55k one, "APPLEŽ VIDEO IPODŽ - 60GB BLACK" is known as a "5G" iPod (from 2005).

so when can we expect the 5.5G ipod's to be available? i got some tivo pts that are itching to be spent before they expire at the end of the month (i realize most 5G have the new screen now, but they don't have the improved battery life of the 5.5G's)

I received my ipod from Tivo with my reward points. It's an ipod photo, so it displays photos, but not videos. It also has the Tivo logo etched on the back. I love it and it only cost me friend's referrals.

I have an iPod with video, and while I don't use the video feature often, when I do use it, I love it. It's great to load it up with a couple of TV shows from the iTunes store before going on a plane trip. (Are iPods still allowed in carry-on luggage, though?)

I don't think it's worth the luggage space to haul along a portable DVD player on a trip (been there, tried that). But an iPod takes up almost no space and can hold hours of video entertainment... plus many more hours of audio entertainment!

So, yeah, I think it's worth the extra 15,000 points. But only you can decide whether it's worth it to you.

And the similarities...

Both try to lock you into Apple's proprietary DRM scheme, ironically named FairPlay.

I have about 500 songs on my iPod and there is no DRM on any of the music files. I use iTunes to rip all of my CDs and use it to manage my podcasts. In no way am I being forced to use any DRM.

Any ideas on when the new shuffle's. I ordered one a few weeks ago, but I know that Apple just this week started shipping.

Any ETA's on when they may get out to Tivo rewards people?

While we have Stephen's ear (and he has the Reward Team's) in this thread, can I hear an aye for more video-capable portable playback devices (non-iPod, with decent-sized screens)? The Zen is seriously outdated ... Archos & Toshiba have some beauties out!

Speaking of new shuffle's I got mine today. Extremely fast service from when they've been actually available from Apple.

Sweet.

I have a suggestion concerning the rewards. I just don't understand why there are so many TiVo Reward choices at the low end and even at the high end, but so few at the middle. Why are there only 3 choices (now even fewer than the 4 there last week) in between 8500 points and 30000 points? Since there are products from other companies in the reward list, how about some from Logitech? I'd like to see one of their lower end Harmony remotes, like the 670 or the 550 for maybe 20000 points. I have a Harmony 659 and I love it, but I could use a second or third one. The TiVo remote does a decent job with my cable box, but it doesn't control my DVD player, my audio systems, my Comcast OnDemand menus, etc.

I ordered the 60 right before it looks like they changed the required point value. I still have not recieved it (its been a couple weeks) I wonder if I can have them change the order since it has not shipped yet.

Whoa - I missed the updates to this thread!

Great additions, Stephen! Thanks!

Although, Hank, I doubt THAT Zen is too good (no video, no?)
<2nd edit> It DOES!Whoa - I think I'll get me one instead of the DT TiVo I was considering ordering! Off to read reviews & comparos!

<edit> Since we have Stephen's ear in this thread (hmm, where have I heard that line before?) that Nikon S7c is getting rather subpar reviews from most camera review sites. Any chance of something else newfangled (go for features instead of pointless 11 gazillion megapixels) and super slim can be added to the scant cameras available as Rewards?

Oh, and Logitech stuff would rock! I ONLY use (and recommend, with substantial influence) Logitech input devices, webcams, remotes ... and I know you folks have had shared promos in the past for the Harmony etc!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I don't deserve any credit here -- I just passed on your suggestions to the hard-working Rewards team.

I've passed on the latest feedback to them.

Coupla questions:

1 - Can we confirm that the 4GB Nano on the Rewards site is the 2G Nano (aluminum rather than plastic)?

2 - Is the rewards 4GB Nano Silver or White? Hard to tell from the picture.

3 - Assume that they actually ship whatever color it is rather than some random color?

4 - Anyone have any ideas for fitting a Creative Zen Vison M into an otherwise iPod home?

I bought a 80GB iPod last week. It is pretty nice. I had 15000 Reward Points so I just ordered the new 1GB Shuffle.

But what about the 30Gb Video iPod?

Can we swap out the Photo for the 30Gb Video? Apple doesn't even sell the iPod Photo anymore.

And what it is that you think Apple does with all the stock of iPods which have become outmoded? They pass them off to places like TiVo Rewards, where many people (not you, obviously) are very happy to get them for free (my daughter was certainly happy enough to get her 4GB mini which I got from TiVo Rewards just before they were dropped). Even though the new 30GB costs less than the 20GB used to, good luck trying to swap out the older one for the newer one unless TiVo specifically lists it, like they did with the 80Gb and the new Shuffle. You'll probably see the 30GB in the list when they run out of the 20GB ones or maybe shortly before.

The APPLEŽ IPOD - 60GB W/COLOR DISPLAY that is in the rewards list won't play video. It's a great product, just out of date.

Just suggesting that they include the 80 AND 30Gb iPod video model.

Or, better yet, replace those weirdly shaped iPods (for video) and replace them with devices people actually want to watch MPEG4-ed .tivo files on - like the large screened Archos or Toshiba Gigabeat units

Unless Apple releases a better designed, with landscape-oriented screen, new video version at CES!

Seems unlikely that they'd introduce it at CES since they don't normally show up and aren't scheduled to for the show next week.

Macworld Expo in SF overlaps w/CES this year and the Jobs keynote is on Tuesday. If he introduces any new iPods, it'll most certainly be there, NOT CES.

Yeah, I forgot about that. Apple likes to be 'different'. Sheesh.

More power to them if they release the touch-screen UI on a landscape-screen iPod that is essentially ALL screen - it was one of the fake mockups over on engadget months (years?) ago! That ... I'd buy! (and still refuse to subscribe to iTunes )

For what it's worth, I'd much rather have a Creative Vision M than an iPod...it does everything an iPod can do for less.
Unless, of course, you really enjoy paying extra for those stupid dancing silhouette commercials.

But it is UGLY as sin. And has the same tiny screen (albeit nicer than the iPod video, from what I've seen/heard). And it's thicker.

I want a slim, landscape, large, good screen with no 'advertising surcharge' added to the price Hence the Toshiba Gigabeat S or Archos suggestion.
