6.3a update comes from Tivo not DirecTV?
I just got off the phone with advanced tech support. The rep told me that the update comes from Tivo, not DirecTV. The update loads via the modem not via satellite!
I'm thinking maybe the tech was wrong... hmmm .... anybody else get this info from DirecTV?

Why on Earth would you believe any information from a tech support person at DirecTV?

Tivo wrote the software under contract from DirecTV. But DirecTV actually delivers the software to your DVR.

He/she is half right. 6.3 was produced by TiVo, but it is sent out via D*. I don't know who's responsible for the testing, whether it's D* and TiVo or a collection of each. It's pretty classless for a D* rep to pass the buck regarding the audio problems as they tried to do with me when I complained.

It's written by Tivo, but controlled by DirecTV. It definitely comes in over the sat; but it's activated by the Tivo "daily call". Which may or may not still go to Tivo, but in any case is separate from the "DirecTV call" that reports PPVs to a different number.
I trust I've only added to your confusion.

Only receivers made by DirecTV update via satellite!
DirecTV Tivo units update and download via modem - telephone line!

You were told wrong, but what difference does it make??? You have to have a phone line connected regardless of where or who it comes from. Why are you so worked up about it that you'd waste so much time on the phone with DirecTV and on here? Hook up your phone line, you'll get the update.

I would sure think the update comes over the sat as the phone call didn't even last a minute when I got my 6.3a this morning!

Both are right. Now with the update happening, the new software comes down from the satellite and is activated with a phone call.
In six months or so after everyone should have been updated, D* will take the update out of the sat stream and it will download and activate via a very long phone call.

Will my HR10 automatically restart when ready to update? Right now it is saying Pending Restart, when will it actually do the restart?

2am.
Or you can simply reboot it now on your own.

Rebooting is unplug it then back in? Is a step in the menu?

You can pull the plug or do a restart from the menus. Either one.
