I have a SA Series 2 TiVo (230) that I upgraded with a 120GB drive (up from the original factory 40). After about a year the 120 died (the TiVo would hang on the powering up screen). I didn't have a replacement handy so I put the old 40 back in (which was un-touched since being removed). At first I got the message that it wouldn't let me record anything, but doing a full clear and restart of everything fixed that issue.
Now the problem I'm having is the TiVo will run out of guide data after the initial guided setup. I spoke with tech support and they identified that the problem is that the 7.3 update is being downloaded instead of the guide data. They told me to restart the TiVo and force the connection 5-6 times and it should get the entire update; I would know when it was ready because the Status would read "Pending Restart". I forced the connection approximately 25 times and was never prompted to restart (bear in mind that this is in addition to the TiVo doing regular connections every 12-24 hours until the guide data ran out). Each connection read as successful and no errors are occurring when connecting. when I called back I was given the same steps to do; the poor girl was very confused and less than helpful when I told her that I had tried that already to no avail. I asked to be connected with tier 2 but hung up after hearing I'd have to wait another 35 minutes. I was able to re-run guided setup and get another chunk of guide data but it's still not updating to 7.3.
So, long story short:
Upgraded TiVo HD died, replaced with original drive (7.2.1.something), cleared and reset all settings, TiVo won't update to 7.3 (gives no errors aside from the "lolz, you're running out of guide data"), TiVo won't get guide data until it updates to 7.3 (unless I re-run guided setup). Anyone have any suggestions?
