I have softwareupgrade=false on bootpage. I have 6.3 sitting on my machine.
1) How do I know if the software has been activated ?
2) If I change softwareupgrade to true, will activation be automatic?
3) Does new software wipe out authors file?
1:See which partition has 6.3 in the /etc/build-version
You need to find out what the boot parameters are. Maybe bootparm has an output.
2: It will activate when it callls home.
3: Technically, I don't think it does erase it, although it will use the entire new software on the other partition, which will need killhdinitrded and have your hacks moved over to it.
