Gone Retail? Only Jump Ship IF...
At this point, if I had ordered an S3 from TiVo.com and I had not already gone retail, I would not jump ship(ping) and go (online) retail now to get the box sooner.
I think the shipping problems are basically over and you'll be getting your TiVoes by Wed. at the latest, but in some cases today (Monday) and Tuesday (sooner than the 7-10 days originally advertised.)
So unless there is a motivation OTHER than time, I would be patient.
I hope I'm right.

Where this idea that the S3 is sold out comes from, I don't know. They're still available at TiVo.com, several other highly reliable and reputable online retailers, and some stores.
We are now in a situation similar to what they call in the semiconductor business 'double ordering.' There are numerous second S3 TiVoes ordered/bought out of panic and disatisfaction; many of those are going to be returned to be resold (some as refurbs.) In the meantime, there are far less S3s on the "shelves" than otherwise would be, but there certainly are S3s on the shelves.

I would like to submit the term "Gone Retail" to the Forum Masters for consideration as a Defined Forum Term.
Its literal meaning is to buy an additional S3 other than at TiVo.com to hedge against problems (perceived or real) with delivery from TiVo.com.
Gone Retail also has many of the connotations of "Gone Postal," which is a common idiom.
The Term may be used in the future for other situations in which similar, analogous or parallel behavior is observed.

I went retail to meet the appt I had for my cablecard installs.
I'm glad I did, since I still have no shipping confirmation, and in my most recent order notification they managed to switch my delivery and billing addresses - not that it really matters, as I still have not received a shipping notification.

I think when you order a product on a Tuesday, select 2-day shipping, and the following Monday they can't even tell you when it will ship, the problem is real, not perceived.
Considering I ordered on Tuesday and as of today they don't have a clue as to the status of my order, I SHOULD have gone retail this weekend. So far I have not recieved a tacking number. I haven't even got one of the mysterious repeat order confirmation emails - which I am pretty sure are generated by the system when they finally re-enter one of the muffed-up orders. I would conclude that mine is still in the line-up of orders waiting to be fixed / shifted to the delivery system / whatever. Since I can't do much 'til next weekend, I don't really care if it gets here today or Friday, but I would like what the hell is going on.
Also, you've decided not to get the S3 - fine, perhaps a very rational decision - but why must you take such glee in messing with those that really want it and are understabdably upset at being given the royal run-around? If I didn't know better, I might suspect that you were just trolling...

Actually I'm pissed off, and have every right to be - strangely I don't like being lied to and inconvenienced by an organization to which I pay considerable sums of money. I think it's really neat how you are able to maintain your zen-like calm by baiting people in on-line fora. I bet it makes you feel really good - perhaps it is the only good thing in your empty little life. Fortunately, I wasn't seeking your advice, so I am not disappointed that you have none to offer - and what your have offered to others on this thread for free is clearly over-priced given it's poor quality.

Note: It is not necessary to fulfill the literal definition by actually ordering another S3 for the Term to be applicable. Gone Retail is intended to be an idiom.
