Tivo S3 Lifetime transfer for $199

Tivo has this new offer :

For a limited time, transfer your product lifetime service from a Series1™ or Series2™ box to the new Series3™ HD for only $199. As an added bonus, we'll keep TiVo service activated on your old box for another 12 months for no additional charge.

How it works:
Buy your TiVo Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder for $799.99.
Once your new box arrives within 7-10 days*, call our VIP line at (866) 424-8486 and we'll transfer service for $199. You will need your TiVo Service Number** for your new and old box ready to process the transfer.

http://www.tivo.com/2.0.3hdDvr.plt.asp

*Ships in 48 hours.

**You can find the 15 digit TiVo Service Number on the back of the DVR or on the System Information screen. (From TiVo Central, select "New Messages & Setup," then "System Information.")

Offer Terms and Conditions

Tivo® Series3TM HD DVR purchase required by 12/31/2006 and activation of the DVR is required by 01/31/2007. Series3 HD DVR must be purchased through TiVo.com. DVRs purchased through retail channels are not eligible.
Offer good for all subscribers with an existing paid Product Lifetime Service subscription.
Product Lifetime Service may be transferred from an existing box to a TiVo Series3 HD DVR only. This offer is not being extended to transfer Product Lifetime Service to any other product.
All terms and conditions for a 1-year prepaid subscription apply to your old DVR. At the end of 1-year, you will be automatically rolled to then-applicable monthly rate. The 1-year contract is not transferable to another party.
Cancellation of only the 1-year contract on the old DVR while still transferring the Product Lifetime Service to the new Series3 HD DVR will be permitted, but only after 60 days of service for both boxes have elapsed. Cancellations on the 1-year contract will not result in refund of the $199 transfer fee. All other warranty replacement costs still apply to the old DVR.
If you return the box within 30 days of placing the order on the website, you will receive a full refund on any paid transfer fee and hardware cost. The shipping charge for the return is at your expense. Returns outside of 30 days will not be accepted. If the transfer is cancelled within the first 30 days, the Product Lifetime Service will remain on your old DVR.
Both boxes will be activated once this process is complete, but the contract information may take over 60 days to be reflected on the DVR or "Manage My Account".
The TiVo Service Agreement applies to the Series3 HD DVR, along with other terms and conditions listed at www.tivo.com/policies. In case of any discrepancies between those terms and those listed in this offer, the terms defined in this offer supersede those posted.

I don't understand why TiVo requires purchase of the S3 from their online store to take advantage of this offer and won't accept transfers to boxes bought at retail outlets. The only reason I can think of is that TiVo makes a little more money off of its direct sales over their retail sales.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

As a Tivo stockholder, I love this requirement.

As a Tivo consumer ... not so much.

TiVo you must be kidding!

Well I held off until I actually read the offer on TiVo's web site and now I know we've been had. Some offer. They sell us a box at list with no opportunity to buy it locally and they are going to let us put life time service on it. How nice . I'm insulted by this. I've been a loyal TiVo owners since 2000 and own 3 units with lifetime service. Too bad you didn't make this a reasonable offer. Like buy a Series 3 at list price ($799) and we'll throw in life time service for free. Now that would have been a deal. This is sad...very sad.

Pardon me but ... Duh? I don't understand what's wrong with TiVo putting this restriction on this offer. Considering the money you will save over the lifetime of this box why not let TiVo make a few extra bucks on the sale?

I wish I could pay $299 vs $199 and have lifetime on BOTH the old and new units.... My series 2 still works perfectly. They said they will throw in one year on the prior unit though. My son will gladly take that Series 2 in his room.

Ok, how do you buy this at Tivo.com? All the pricing options include a service plan. Where is the "I don't want to buy service, I am going to transfer an existing lifetime." option?

Interesting. That's word-for-word what you said in THIS post. Did you just cut and paste it?

What retail outlets have them now? I tried searching a bit online, but I couldn't find S3 at amazon or best buy.

Best Buy has them - it is on their site and some stores, Circuit City also has it.
