Fox football has built in padding this year

http://www.thefutoncritic.com/charts.aspx?id=fall_2006

just wanted to pass along the good news for those that dont know it. Let's hope the repeats they show actually stop at 8pm and that they are king of the hill or futurama or even malcolm

I'm confused what you mean by "built-in padding". Do you mean that the 4:15 (Eastern) games on Fox's NFL doubleheaders are scheduled to run until 8 PM?

If so, this isn't really "new" - last year, Fox got tired of all of the complaints from King of the Hill fans who got new episodes "in progress" because NFL coverage ran past 7:30, so they decided on those days to run their post-game show (it was called "The O.T." last years) until 8 PM. In the Mountain and Pacific time zones, they are airing older episodes of Nanny 911 in the hour before The Simpsons.

When it's not a doubleheader day, most Fox stations don't get a 4:05 game (note the time difference), so there's no problem of an overrun. I expect that, in most cases, the reruns will be The Simpsons at 7:00 and King of the Hill at 7:30 (although on 9/17, Fox is repeating the first episode of its new series 'Til Death at 7:30). In any case, the two repeats would end at 8:00, and the cities with 4:05 games would get the 7:00 show "in progress".

I'm pretty sure they had the same schedule last year from 7-8 ET. They always started the Simpsons on time, even to the annoying point of JIP'ing brand new episodes of Malcolm in the Middle which normally started at 7:30. The only way the Simpsons started late was if the actual game (well, possibly including just a minimal couple of minutes of post-game wrap-up) ran past 8:00, which was very very rare.

Btw, I'm about to add a "retired (must watch though) Sony T60 2-160 drives" to my list. I assume you mean you're no longer recording on it, just burning off existing recordings, which is the case with mine.

yes and with 2 75%+ full HDtivos....gonna be hard to get to the unsubbed T60 with 2 years of BSG plus the original (4?) hour movie on it. Not to mention tons of other stuff.

I didnt remember the futon listing specifically saying 1 hr repeats last year, i just always had padded simpsons by 1/2 hour automatically.

Malcolm wasn't on at 7:30 during football season last year except when it was not a Fox doubleheader day, in which case most of the eastern half of the country would have had just a game from 1:00 to about 4:30 Eastern and would have aired Fox's normal programming starting at 7:00. In a situation like this, when a 4:05 game on a small number of Fox stations runs past 7:30, the national feed has already started the 7:30 show, so the station picks it up from wherever it is at the time.

The two main reasons the shows before 8:00 are joined in progress rather than delaying the entire schedule: one, Fox does not want a situation where somebody tunes in The Simpsons at 8:00 (or Family Guy at 9), sees King of the Hill (or The War at Home, although now American Dad has the 8:30 slot), thinks The Simpsons is pre-empted that night, and changes the channel; two, the local stations complain when their 10:00 news is delayed. On the other hand, Fox realizes that The Simpsons is one of its popular shows, so they will delay the schedule rather than air an episode in progress, although if a game runs until 8:30, Fox will pre-empt a show (most likely its 9:30 show) rather than run the entire schedule until 10:30 (and I wouldn't put it past Fox to pad its post-game show to 8:30 if the last game ends at, say, 8:15).

Yeah, I realized since I posted that that I must have been thinking of two years ago. That all makes sense, and even though Malcolm was the only show I really watched out of those got pre-empted and it was a lot less often than some of the others were affected, I'm really glad they've gone this route.

If you also watch Cold Case and Without a Trace, check out this thread. Someone had a pretty good idea there how to handle padding for those.

It was always a p*sser when the Holiday episode of KOTH got overrun by a game regularly running into OT, because FOX refused to play it during the re-runs as it was out of season.

Meaning I had to watch the writeups for the KOTH showings on FX in order to see it 1-2 years later.

It was little wonder that FOX almost canceled next seasons KOTH due to low Neilsens, People just gave up on the show for fear of catching the end of the game that they might have been recording.

do you think they have a clue what's happening and why futurama and king had low ratings? or does a cartoon show cost more than a people show?

If you are recording nothing else after TAR, why not set a manual recording for the 1 hour period after TAR? We also record Cold Case and Without a Trace, which are sort of pads for the previous show. But I am also setting a manual recording for 11pm-12am. If the game finishes on time, I can always cancel the manual recording. If it runs over, I am set, and have plenty of time to add to my manual recording if I am home and notice I need more than 1 hour.

Also, by doing it this way, if they don't go over, and it takes me a while to watch WaT, I haven't taken up extra space that sits used until I watch the WaT episodes.

No, because many, many, many years of experience have shown them that people will wait for "60 Minutes" to start (and then stick with the entire Sunday lineup) no matter how late the game runs -- and their affiliates don't seem to mind if their late news gets delayed, perhaps because they have a much longer history with it than Fox's affiliates do.
