New Fall Season

I just recently upgraded to a high definition DirecTv/Tivo unit. I know that sports are definately an improvement in High Def. But witht he upcoming fall season, and the short recording time available on it (20 Hours (at least for now)), what returning shows are worth taking up this valuable space?

Drop in a second hard drive. Pretty much, I'd even go out on a limb, about 90% of all primetime networks shows are now HD.

Don't add a second hard drive. Double the noise, heat, and drain on the power supply. A single 300gb drive should handle whatever you want to put on it. Do a google search for 'hinsdale howto' to get instructions on how to replace a DTivo drive.

Again, we get bad advice about adding a 2nd drive. The amount of noise and heat is generally negligible when adding another drive to a Tivo. The noise depends entirely on what kind of drive you install. The additional heat that's generated is minimal and well within operating parameters of both the Tivo and the drives. Just make sure the Tivo gets plenty of ventilation and you won't ever have a problem with heat. If you plan on putting it inside of an entertainment center with doors then reconsider using a Tivo at all.

A replacement 300GB drive will add minimal storage to a stock HDTivo, probably in the neighborhood of about 6 more HD hours. A single 500GB or an additional 250GB drive will get you a total of 63 hours of HD recording time. You'll also need to look beyond Hinsdale's for upgrading a HDTivo drive since it doesn't include instructions for increasing the swap file beyond 127MB nor does it cover the -r 4 switch with mfsrestore, both of which are a necessity for upgrading this unit.
