Mythbusters this week: Diet Coke and Mentos

Not that the reaction is any type of myth.... but it'll will be interesting to see what they do with it. I'm hoping they use the container they used for the whirlpool to fill that with coke and dump in a truckload of mentos.... or do the pigs stomach thing so that we can see if you can actually blow up your stomach by drinking coke and then swallowing a bunch of mentos.

Anybody know where I can find the video of kids who would throw the Mentos into the bottle then slam the bottle onto the ground and watch it bounce umpteen feet into the air, propelled by exploding soda?

I'm curious what direction they're going to take this since it isn't a 'myth'. Hopefully they'll go into the insanely large direction mentioned earlier

I'm a little behind, just watched it tonight on the TiVo. Did anyone started to think it was a planted line when Kari started talking about her FHM shoot? I assumed it was a random nonsequitor, until they showed the clips where she was being photographed behind an exploding soda bottle.

I had seen the FHM shoot, so no, I wasn't surprised by it. I am glad they shared the pictures, as well as the video (which was pre-airbrushing--the only way Kari should be presented).

I really liked the way they did the mentos thing. We know it's not a myth, but they still dove into it with their own brand of pseudo-science. I would have liked to see them try other types of pop, though, rather than just the soda water.

The helicopter thing? That was a travesty. I always wanted a remote control helicopter, and seeing them destroy one was painful to me.

Amen to that. I cringed when they tore it apart basically just for the picture shoot. Didn't they say the thing cost like 2 grand???

Weird relationship on this show...

Cheap RC copter, Expensive RC copter, Renting a real chopper == $$$$ and completely totally lame stupid "of course it's not real" myth

Lots of soda, candy, some PVC tubing == almost no $ and a really entertaining look at a non-myth.

OK, whats FHM? and I also agree with the travesty of the exploding helicopter, I swore they were building that thing so someone could take it home, I can't belive they destroyed it. Next time just send it to me!

"FHM" For Him Magazine. It a tame men's magazine with articles on sex, beer, cars annd gadgets. The women pictured are semi-nude, but little is ever shown. I would rate this magazine's photo content as PG-13.

The whole helicopter/stamp "myth" segment was lame. What did the stamp weigh? 1.5 grams? Wouldn't it have been far simpler to just weigh two helicopter blades and see if the difference in weight is greater than the weight of a stamp? If greater, myth busted. If not, then continue investigating.

I absolutely love this show, but sometimes they seem really hard up for legitimate myths to test and the science isn't very sound.

Also, wonder why their Diet Coke/Mentos rockets didn't work, since there are clips all over the Net of Diet Coke bottles flying around like rockets, so there's obviously enough propulsion there in some situations.

I have to admit, the mentos segment was probably one of the most entertaining of Mythbusters ever. My two favorite parts...Adam says, "What can I call this, a plasma sword?" And his little story at the end with the conclusion "You're new here, aren't you?"

I agree - very entertaining. My favorite moment was Adam's expression after his succesful first attempt, followed by him saying "we're going to have to try that - a bunch more times!"

Did no one see the "Mythbusters JAWS Special" a few weeks ago? It wasn't picked up by a Mythbusters SP, so I had to record it separately. Anyway, the thing was like all Kari, all the time (seriously, she was in every scene)... and we got to see her in a bikini.

So, I can report that, no, there's nothing wrong with her stomach.
