Welcome to Tivo sample

Has anyone ripped or sampled the little tune which is played when Tivo boots up ?

I guess it's an MPEG stored on the hard disk somewhere.

You may find this very recent thread to be of relevance to your question:-

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=309987

Using this you should be able to play the Tivo Guy video on Tivo enough times until you become sick of it and no longer even want to rip it to DVD.

After watching it 10 or 15 times from the Tivo I spotted all sorts of interesting things with the colours of balls going down shoots etc while TivoGuy is prancing around of which I was previously wholly and utterly unaware.

Now you've made ME watch it - can't see what you mean by "all sorts of interesting things with the colours of balls going down shoots" though [and I'm sure you meant "chutes"]
