America's Got Talet - 8/2/06
I felt this group was, overall, a better group. In my opinion, all the groups, except the last too, had talent and deserved to be there.
Even though I disagree with the judges choice at the the top act, I think it was a fair choice (Have I mentioned I don't like the Rappin Granny?)
The Good...
Celtic Spring - I completely disagree with Peirce. Their act is a family act, and the Mom/Dad provide valuable background music for the front 5.
Quick Change - Even with Tivo slo-mo, I couldn't figure them out. (However, do they have more to their act?)
The Jugglers (Sorry, NBC does list them since they are the judges favorite) - Very Entertaining
Michelle LaMour - Sorry I am guy, sue me.
Lilia Stepanova - See above.
The Bad
King Charles Troup - They probably are good, but they were completely out of sync tonight. Too bad.
Desperation Squade - Just bad.
I went ahead and voted for Celtic Spring.

I agree with most of your picks.
My favorite would be Celtic Spring. I, too disagree with Pierce...and think they're valuable as a whole. I don't see a need to get rid of any of the members! Even without the violins I would think they were the most talented group, but to combine the dancing with the music is just awesome! And can I just give a big to Pierce for making the little girl cry...then the little boy crying backstage into his daddy's shoulder just broke my heart. Yes, I cried!
Next fave: Quick Change. We've always loved this act at the circus, though the woman there didn't even use things to cover her up, she'd open an umbrella and voila! She had changed outfits! Amazing stuff!! We also did the slo-mo and though it still didn't give much away, we think we've got it figured out. It's still a very amazing act though!
I really couldn't get into the burlesque act. Ok, maybe it's 'cuz I'm female, or maybe it's 'cuz this is a family show and I'll be fast forwarding through the entire section of the show when my kids watch it tomorrow. I do have to give her props for using Kitt though, and the music mix was perfect! Very creative, but still a big red X (or should that be XXX) from me.
I'd almost love to see Desperation Squad make it to the finals just to prove a point. Not sure what that point would be, other than this show has no credibility, but it would make me laugh. Not enough to vote for them though.
The jugglers were boring to me, but then again I'm watching it on tv with no depth to it. I'm sure in the studio it was very impressive.
<rant>
Every week we get mad about this but always forget to say something...the camerawork gets the biggest red X possible! We've missed out on some of the best parts of the acts because we're too busy watching the audience. Uh, hello? We're not judging the audience! Let us watch the acts we're supposed to be judging please! GRRRRRRRR!!!! </rant>

I thought it was a pretty poor group tonight. The dancers were all right, Lilia was cute, but pretty much the same act, like Quick Change. The rest were nothing to write home about.

I could not agree more. The camerawork on here is so piss poor. Not only for the way you mentioned above, but WTF is it with the way they show the rock bands? They cut scenes so damn quick, I almost feel like I have to puke after the act is over. The most they have one shot on the screen is 3 seconds. What the heck is the purpose here?
Also Katbug, you mention that you figured out quick change. Please share, I am dying to know. I used the TIVO slo-mo and could not see a thing.
As for my favorite act last night, I would have to either say Lilia Stepanova, that is abosultely amazing what she can do (and can she possibly be any cuter by the way?) or the tap dancing twins who were absolutely amazing.

Quick Change is amazing. Even if we know how they do it, the fact they can do it so well would still impress me.
The unicycle team was a mess. It really looked like they had not prepared at all.
The jugglers (judge's pick) really entertained me. it was something fresh and different.
Stepanova, she really had the same act again. Seeing her shoot the arrow was cool the 1st time, not so cool the 2nd.

I went back later and showed my wife the highlights (amazing how a 2 hr show cane be viewed in 30 minutes. ) I changed my opinion just a little regarding Celtic Spring and Piers opinions. I somewhat agree that the youngest brother does not need to be in the act. He came out and did his little dance, which was cute, but didn't add anything to the rest of the act. It felt like they were looking for the cute factor and symphthy vote for bringing him out. Otherwise, I still think the parents are the glue of the act that keeps it running and should be part of the act.

Wait, where was KITT?I must have missed it! I think she knows she is never going to get through to the finals so just went all out. Even if you don't think she has "talent' you have to give her props for a pretty entertaining act with KITT.

The arrow shooting contortionists was amazing... Then her act wasn't too bad...
She is the rare contortionist that still has a hot little body, generally they are built like 12 yo boys.
The stripper was pretty funny, if only because of the self-rightous Brandy bitching about it so much. I was impressed they got a good version of KITT. They showed her sitting in it during a cut to commerical and you could see the dash board.
The juggling act was REALLY funny. I was glad they got picked. I was laughing the whole time. I could imagine seeing them on Comedy Central pretty soon.
WTF was up with the Unicycle troop? That was just a mess. Funny that Piers and The Hoff made Brandy give the X vote.

Ok, I'm going to attempt the "highlight the text to see the message" thing for this so it doesn't ruin it for those who want to keep the magic...and it's hard to explain, so please bear with me.

1. The dresses are double-sided
2. The dresses velcro up at the straps
3. After each 2, they bring out a prop that allows one to be dropped and buried
Notice that all are sleeveless and progressively get less and less? So she starts with one dress, unvelcros and lets it drop to create the bottom of that dress, next change is a drop of the whole dress. One after another. When she gets to the bigger dresses, the bottom has been rolled/folded up somehow in the chest area.
P.S. If you look closely after the first change I think it is...when she steps out of the box and is high stepping, you can see the yellow dress underneath.
|
Yep, I agree, even knowing this makes it very entertaining and amazing.

I agree.
Passing zone was good, however. The rest, not so much.

All you need to do is use [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler] tags and it will do that automatically.

That's pretty much what I had figured.
(By the way, use the word "spoiler" instead of "quote" in the formatting tags, and your text will be automatically hidden without further formatting.)

Oh man - after watching I was definitely even more perturbed that Rappin' Granny is wasting 1/8th of the final spots... Had they moved any of the other decent acts (Celtic Spring, Quick Change, even the tap dancers!) to last week, I don't think there's any way they could have put Granny through and still maintained some level of credibility.
RE: Celtic Spring - loved 'em. I do think the parents need to be there -- they're the rhythm section! I do also agree that the little kid, while cute, probably could have been left out of the act until he was a little older. They were going for the "cute factor" and Piers called them on it. Probably he could have done it a little more politely, but hey - that's his schtick.

I forgot to mention that this episode wasn't all "family-friendly" to my friends. One called me up furious and getting ready to write a nasty letter to the producers for putting a stripper on a family show. Her kids saw it and were quite shocked. Not a happy family and they won't be watching the show any more.
I wonder how many other families had this experience? I'm just glad that I watched it last night without the kids first so I can completely skip that scene when showing the kids the show or I would probably have the same reaction. Not cool NBC!!

I'll tell ya all - After the rappin' granny debacle of last week, this panel of judges has lost ALL credibility with me now and forever. There has been some actual talent that is losing out because of some of their moronic decisions. In the beginning I actually thought this show would be at least ONE reality show that would be fair and forthright...that's what I get for doing my own thinking!
And now, tonight, we get to hear Hasselhoff sing?? Holy Crap, Batman!

I know this probably won't go over well here, but I was glad Quick Change did not make it through. They are a side show act at best. I base that not on having seen them perform outside this show, so that may not be entirely fair, but for me the only difference I noticed between their audition series act and the semi-final was that she had a patriotic dress on at the end. It all looked like the exact same act to me.
And maybe this just isn't my week for picking up on the subtleties that make an act worthy of moving on, did Passing Zone really do much more than spin people around on tethers without slamming them into each other??? I was more impressed by what they did on the results show.
Then again, after last week's Rappin' Granny fiasco, maybe I should just resign myself to the fact that I am absolutely no judge of talent. I'm obviously not in the same judging league as the Big Hasselhoff and Brandy.
By the way, who has a bigger crush on Hasselhoff - Regis, or Hasselhoff himself?

LMAO ... Hard to tell, but I think Hasselhoff himself has the bigger crush!
Well, I was not pleased with the viewer vote winner but, oh well! I like the quick change couple but I wonder if we've seen it all, or their act is more diverse...

Are we allowing talk about the result show in this thread? Just want to make sure before I say anything spoilerish!
Non-spoiler comment
My wife noticed that results show was TV-14 and was wondering why. After watching the Cirque de Soleil act, we now know. If was almost was just as risque as the Stripper act.

There wasn't anything shown... She showed less than what you would see at any swimming pool or beach setting.
So, what is the issue?

lol, nope, not going there. There's already enough ugly arguing about it on the NBC forum and this forum is blissfully unargumentative, so let's just agree to disagree on this one.

P.S. Just wanted to add that I thought Dave, the one man sideshow was very underrated...his singing was much better than George Kelly (which started off all right, but turned into a choir boy kinda voice, not the full, rich voice I was expecting). I know, his act wasn't about his singing, but maybe it should have been...he has a beautiful voice!

That guy was just strange. Entertaining, but strange...
I guess that's why he's a one-man sideshow...

I don't see any need for spoiler tags there.
I was wondering the same thing. It sounded exactly like the recording. It was almost like he did that long last note just to prove he was singing. If he wasn't actually singing, he did a great job keeping in sync.
