HD bad in DVR40, Can I just plug a new HD in?

I have an RCA DVR40 (Series 2). I moved it and now when I plug it back in and power up, it is stuck on "Welcome. Powering up..." (for 10min or more). DirecTv support tells me that it looks like the hard drive is bad. Can I just replace the drive?

I build my own PCs, so I am comfortable with these changes, however I'm not familiar with Tivo changes/hacking. If it is that simple, it would be great, but I would guess that the OS must reside on some other hardware in the box for this to work.

Let me know what my options are, if any.

Thanks for your help!
Ken.

Read the sticky messages at the top of this forum. The short answer is you have a PC with dual IDE channels and a CDRW drive, then you should be able to install the Tivo software while the new drive is in your PC using the MFS Tools 2 CD.
