Upgrading HDVR2 vs R10

Been having pixelation and other picture problems with my HDVR2. Searching most of the forums suggests that this is probably a problem with the hard drive. (Satellitte signal is strong, connections are good, etc.)

DirecTV will replace my HDVR2 with one of their refurbished TIVO models (HDVR2, R10, H10) for $20 or I can just order a Weaknees HD upgrade kit.

Trying to understand if their are any major feature differences between the R10, H10, and HDVR2 worth noting. I don't have High Def, so would be forced to run the H10 in standard mode. DTV says they aren't sure which system they will send me, depends on whats available at the time. Any suggestions?

Also, there are recordings on my TIVO that I want to keep, probably forcing me to purchase a DVD-R to capture my desired programs. How easy is a transfer of data to a new HD?

Thanks...

I would go with the upgrade kit as you never know for sure if DirecTV will send you a DirecTiVo or one of their own non TiVo DVR's that have all the problems. From what I hear they cant guarantee you will get a DirecTiVo.

I have an HDVR2 and an R10, and functionally they are identical. The R10 has greater recording capacity (I think it's either 70 or 100 hours, vs 30 hours with the HDVR2), but the biggest difference is hackability. The R10s are pretty much unhackable, so if using Zipper or something similar is of interest to you, you're better off going with the hard drive upgrade for your existing HDVR2. Personally, I'd prefer to do an upgrade on my own unit than play refurb roulette from D*. Never know what unit you'll get, and you'll never know if it's been completely fixed.

As for transferring existing shows, I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to help you there as I haven't had any experience doing it. You might do a search and see what you come up with, or another more technical answer might pop up in this thread a bit later.

Good luck!

Thanks. After more inspection, I think I simply have a bad tuner not a bad hard drive, so updrading the hard drive alone probably wont solve the problem...will probably just buy an R10 and keep the HDVR2 as a second receiver...

Thanks for the assistance...

With your scenario I think you have two options for transferring your shows

1. Record to Media such as VHS or DVD which is very easy using the transfer commands within TiVo.

2. Since your buying a new unit, look a buying it from Weaknees and send your current unit to them. They can transfer your current data over to the new unit. The bad part is you will be without a receiver unless you have a standard one sitting around to use until it is returned.
