HR10-250 stuttering

Lately my (2) HR10-250's have been having some issues with stuttering video/audio. One is worse than the other. Over this past weekend my wife was watching Lifetime (How can anyone watch that crap) and it was stuttering every 5 minutes.

Is this the start of a bad HDD?

I have had both of my HR10-250's replaced twice for this same issue.

It is most likely a failing hard drive.

It sounds like a dying drive. It seems these HR10's love to eat drives! I'm on my second HR10. The first one only lasted 3 months. It better not eat my nice new 400GB Seagate I just put in it!

Mine does that only when I've been on the same channel for many hours. If I change channels and come back to the original channel, it doesn't do it anymore. This is my 2nd HR10-250 and both of them behaved the same. I'm not sure why it happens but this has always been a quick, easy fix.

I'll try that next time it happens. It has been fine today. However, the day it did the stuttering this week, Lifetime was the channel she had been on all day long. So maybe there is something to what you are saying.

I just had my new 10-250 replaced with a refurbed unit after it was starting to have blackouts at different intervals and also would have a wavy line at the top of the screen. The tech figured it was a failing HD but after replacing the new one, I can't get my local channels to come in. Tech support also failed and I have another service call coming Friday.

The worst thing is I could have swore that my refurb unit had a couple black outs already. Any idea to get my locals back? They are not HD.

Is this what stuttering is about?

I assume you're talking about sat-based SD locals. Do they not show up in the guide, or are they just not tuning in?

It will probably get progressively worse until rebooting only works for a few minutes (at least that is what my first three did).

Mine started doing this about a month ago.

Also, while in the middle of a show, it suddenly paused for about 15 seconds and then it said "Welcome" and went through a reboot! WTF?!?!?!

Some have mentioned the hard drive is going out. Is it relatively easy to install a new HD in these things? I haven't kept up with the other forum in over a year.

This is what I normally did. I pulled my 300GB maxtor drive out and RMAd it. It also did this with the original 250GB drive. Pulling the plug seemed to work for me for about 24 hours...then the problem comes back....it was getting so bad that I could barely watch the news...really P***** me off.

Well see if I have any luck with the new drive. Oh and maybe the new 6.3 upgrade that is supposedly coming soon will help.

I swear sometimes I feel like taking a hammer to this thing.

Mine started stuttering about a month ago also. Seems to be worse on a couple of my local channels.

I just got off the phone with Lydia in Tech Support at D*. This was after I suffered my way thru 1st line support and they told me to check my mute button on my remote. Anyhow Lydia said had never heard of the problem with stuttering of Audio(I have a pair of 250's, each on a separate dish--one of my dishes is the Mpeg 4 dish-- and both 250's have the stuttering problem). She then went off to speak to her Supervisor, he had not heard of the problem either. I suggested that they check out this website to find what us chickens are eating out here. Lydia was very nice and tried to be helpful.

Do we really think this is the HD?

Mine has had this problem since I got it last December. Seems more prominent on certain channels (like Discovery HD).

The stuttering seems to become a permanent feature in the recording. If I rewind, it will always stutter in the exact same spot.

Nearly all the time for me it is a audio hesistation only, although I have seen both video and audio happen.

When we get people claiming they have 2 or even 4 of these units all with the same problem, it seems quite far fetched to claim its all hard drive related.

Anyone with multiple units ever recorded the same show on both units and found the drop-out to occur in the same spot on both? If that did happen, we certainly can rule out the hard drives.

Terabyte gone bad

I just got a HR10-250 and replaced the original drive with two 500GB QuickView drives. After about two weeks it is rebooting nonstop, won't event start.

I just put the original drive back in and it seems to work fine, but don't have any recordings set, so will do this and see if this causes a similar problem.

When the pair of drives was working there was some stuttering and then restarting while watching recorded programs.

I am going to try and diagnose to see if I got a bad drive or not. Any tips on fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I have added drives to all of my 3 SD units and haven't had any problems with them. One of which is an original that was bought the day they came out.

Thanks in advance,
