Hangs on Welcome, Powering Up...
My beloved TiVo is hanging at the Welcome, Powering Up... screen this morning. Right before it happened, there was a whole lot of clicking noises. I assume my hard drive is toast (TiVo's been working hard for almost 3.5 years with hardly any issues). However, does anyone know any other component failures that could cause this symptom before I go out and replace the drive.
Also, if the drive is dead for TiVo operating purposes, is there any way to get my SP, WL, and thumb ratings to a new drive?

It is the HDD that is bad(hence the clicking). A replacement will fix your problem.

You won't get the SP, WL, and thumb ratings to a new drive.

I'm fairly sure it's the HDD as well, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen their TiVo hang on the Welcome. Powering up... screen and the problem was something other than the hard drive?

I tried rebooting a few times with no success but I tried unplugging it for over an hour and trying to reboot again and it recovered. However, it happened again. On reboot, it's working again but who knows for how long. Right now I'm transfering whatever recordings I can to my PC before it dies again.

90% of the time its the hard drive, but its not 100% of the time. If the unit is on monthly than just buy a new TiVo from TiVo for free with a one year service contract (cost $155) and sell the other TiVo on E-Bay, if you sell it with the new accessories you got with your new TiVo you should net about $30 to $40 giving you a net cost for an 80h TiVo of about $125 or so with one year of service. The only time its worth working on fixing TiVos is when they have lifetime on them.

Yeah, my TiVo has a lifetime sub. It's a Sony SVR-3000. I guess I'll get a new hard drive and hope that this doesn't fall into the 10% category.

I disagree. IF the problem is the HDD, you might as well use this as an opportunity to upgrade the drive to a much larger size. I do not believe in just trashing/selling it and getting a new one in this case.
Besides, chances are that it is the drive. If not, return the drive. No worries.
