Shuttle landing HD coverage

Hi ALL,

I tuned into HDNet at 9 AM EDT to watch the shuttle Discovery's landing in HD. Understandably it was probably not in view at the beginning so the announcer's image was being shown reading a bunch of filler "news". Unfortunately he went on and on and on until they finally switched to the landing and the shuttle was only a second or two from touching down on the landing strip. Boy was I disappointed.

Of course I was glad they landed safely, but I expected to see a lot more than just a second or two of the landing. Usually they show the shuttle miles out, dropping like a rock with wings. Its usually pretty interesting.

I also watched the launch and that was done quite will. The video was always on the launch pad, with the announcer's filler news only on the audio.

Anyone know why they screwed up the landing coverage so badly?

Thanks,
Gerry

What you want would have required all the cameras be HD. They aren't.

Sounds like you need to send an e-mail to Mark Cuban and ask him. He's pretty good about responding too.

I watched in SD and got to see the shot from the nose cam with the HUD information pasted on it. It was neat seeing the symbols for the runway come up on the HUD before the shuttle broke through the cloud layer and when it did break through, the runway was right where the HUD said it was!

The shuttle may be an old beater, but she is still cool. I think lots of people are pissed she didn't blow up on the 4th. I heard lots of people say they wanted it to. Sad, real sad.

I don't think it's that they want anything disastrous to happen to the people on board... but at this point in the shuttle's mission, it's costing more and more to keep it flying, money that could better be spent redirecting it towards the new launch vehicle. The best thing fiscally would be to have something happen that permanently grounds the fleet.

According to the info at JSC, the Shuttle program is to cease in 2010 at which point more funds will be used to develope Aries. (I could be wrong about the name)

I agree on getting a newer shuttle, but I literally heard dozens say the wanted it to blow up on launch.
