What volume do you have your Tivo sound effects set at?
I thought it would be interesting to see what level everyone uses for their Tivo's sound effects. IMO, anything but Low is too loud.

I turned them off within minutes of initial setup. I couldn't stand hearing "pop goes the weasel" when I fast forwarded through commercials. Whoever picked those particular notes for the fast-forward really had no business being in the GUI business. Total amateur. Also, the fact that it hasn't been changed after numerous updates speaks volumes.

I love that "pop goes the weasel" sound.
Personally, I don't know why TiVo has any settings besides Low and Off. Anything beyond Low is deafening in relation to program sound.

I say Tivo got it right... Medium is just right...
But then my TV/sound system volume is only at 25-30%... I could make the TiVo sound effects too loud on Low, too, by just turning up the volume on my TV/sound system, but then my cable would also be too loud, and since I don't use a cable box, I have no other volume control for it. So, TiVo's sound effects are perfectly in line with my cable system's broadcasts.
So, if they do decide to add some additional levels, they need to leave Medium and High as-is, and just add some lower levels for those whose sound systems are turned up...
Plus, there are many people in the public eye who have publicly stated that they like the TiVo sounds, and it isn't a TiVo without them... Allyson Hannigan even joked when DirecTV replaced her DirecTiVo with their own DVR that she then had to begin making the TiVo sounds herself... she made a big deal about how the new DirecTV DVR was NOT a TiVo, and she wanted her TiVo back...
TiVo's sound effects are uniquely identifiable with TiVo... so it seems TiVo did well with respect to that...

Anything over "low" is too loud.
Even the "low" TiVo sounds can be too loud sometimes though. They can startle the crap out of you after watching a couple of hours of programming with a DD surround track (which essentially disables the TiVo sounds) and then you switch to the Menu or NPL and all of a sudden hear the bongs and gongs and pops!

Can anyone tell me what the default setting for a S1 would be? Then I will mark that as my answer.

Real Tivo boxes are "Low", DirecTivo boxes are "Off" - would prefer a "Lower" setting

Mine is OFF. I use a cable box (Motorola HD/non-DVR box, with Comcast), with its audio level set at its recommended default. My spouse told me in forceful terms to get rid of of the TiVo sounds, as it was driving her nuts.

Low.
Low. If there were a lower setting than low, I'd use it. The only reason I leave it on at all is the confirmation of IR commands. Something I really miss with my Comcast DVRs (Scientific Atlanta).

I just discovered my cable box (an HD Pace model) actually has volume up/down on the front panel. (Who knew?! ) By upping the volume on the cable box I was able to turn down my stereo receiver. Net result; Low is much lower.
