So You Think You Can Dance 7/12, 7/13 (spoilers)

Did anyone see the first hour? My TiVo recorded the 9-10 PM timeslot, but someone posted in SP Alerts that the new material actually started about 9 minutes earlier. (8-9 PM did not record because the Guide Data said it was a repeat of last Thursday's episode).

Performance of the night: Benji and Donyelle

Really good but not quite there: Travis and Martha

Apart from those two, it was yet another frustrating night of watching performances where one dancer made you go wow and one was not so hot.

Most Maddening performance of the night: Allison and Ivan dancing to Annie Lennox's "Why". Would really have loved this routine if the male dancer was as good as Allison.

Musa -- WOW! Natalie -- good but not a wow.

Allison -- WOW! Ivan -- improved, sure, but not a wow.

Ashlee and Dmitry -- I liked Ashlee, but if you play the 'what if we rotated dancers' game, what would Donyelle would have done with it?

Heidi and Ryan -- was that really a cha-cha? The music was giving me Dancing With the Stars 'what they heck were they thinking about this music' bad music flashbacks.

Gotta give the to Tyce DiOrio tonight, since his two couples really brought it.

If there's any justice, Benji and Donyelle will be safe, but for everyone else, who knows?

Who would you put in the bottom three?

If the trend to send home both halves of the same couple continues, I think Ashlee and Dmitry are the most vulnerable -- but if not, the judges have been going after Ryan, so I think he could be out instead.

We're down to all the couples I reallly like to watch, so unless they start taking out dancers individually, elimination night is going to be a drag from now on. Unfortunately Ivan seems to be made of Teflon so I doubt I'll be seeing Allison dancing with anyone else any time soon.

I think that Benji or Allison will win and both are very good. I like Allison the best. Since they are forced to dance in pairs, you would think that the best pair would win: one boy and one girl. Too bad only one can win.

This is my first season watching and I am really enjoying the show.

"Sex Bomb" really is a cha cha. It's frequently played at ballroom parties and it's been used in a couple of exhibition numbers by competitive couples. It probably didn't look like one because Ryan has absolutely no personality to his dancing.

My daughter and I were laughing at Ivan. His arm positions were so weird - from King Tut to stirring a huge bowl. I don't know why the judges praised him so highly.

I think Ashlee is going home this week. I like Alison, Heidi, & Donyelle out of the girls, and Benji out of the boys. I like Martha too, but not as much.

If Heidi's and Benji's partners went home, would they put them together?

Wow - that's pretty cool. Makes me wonder if the current show is doing everything they can to ensure they aren't paired up together when dancers get eliminated.

That was the style of the dance and he did an amazing job with it. That's why the judges praised him.

They may have decided not to pair them up up until now, but according to what was announced tonight, future pairings will be random (not completely random though, because it was also announced that everyone was guaranteed to have a new partner for next week).

Will it be random like the hat of hate that obviously only has one dance in it when they pick? I won't believe it's random until I see Heidi draw either Benji or Dmitry (if guaranteed a new partner, it's a 50/50 chance).
It was fun watching everybody as they announced the new format for next week. You could get a pretty good idea of who would miss their partner and who was ready for someone new!

Yeah, the hat thing is bogus. I wasn't really paying attention at first, but then when Cat put the hat on after one of the couples drew and no other bits fell out it was obvious.

Next week is going to be interesting. Very interesting.

I am pretty POed at the judges right now for sending Musa home. I don't think he should have lasted longer than one more week, but I would have liked to see him dance with someone other than Natalie once, just to see how it would have turned out.

Musa's Quickstep sucked, but some of Dmitry's dancing has been less than stellar. Ordinarily I would say that Dmitry better get lucky in what dance he draws, but you can't really say that about this season, can you?

For the partner draw, one could do a random draw and exclude the former partner simply by not having the former partner's name in the hat. So -- if it is a real draw -- the first dancer will be picking from a pool of four.

I thought Alison looked amazing and Ivan awkward doing the same moves. But what do I know?

I think that Dmitri is only still in it so that Mary can "work with him" like she did Artem...

Although the "channel your inner Dimitri" bit was probably my favorite bit of any SYTYCD episode.

I'm so glad the judges mentioned the "sex kitten" role that Natalie has been playing. I was getting very sick of her. If she takes the critique to heart she might be able to stay another couple of weeks.

Well, it could have been the last couple who drew out of the hat, leaving nothing remaining.

Agreed. This is the first season for us watching it, and I'm surprised that we're still watching it - I wasn't expecting much, but it's been OK (relative to other things available to watch this summer).

Ugh.

It should've been Natalie and Dmitry gone this week. I'm SOOOO sick of Dmitry, he just reminds me of Artemis, except with more cocky attitude and less talent. Musa was doing *well*, IMO, and he was definitely learning - Dmitry does the same thing. Someone PLEASE give him a shirt that still has all the buttons on it, wouldja??? (Disclaimer - Musa is a hometown boy, and I was really pulling for him to get a lot further. )

And Natalie with the sex kitten thing, I was really sure she was going, this time. Again, with Ashlee, she's been outside her comfort zone often, and she's stepped up and really tried.

It'd be interesting to see Heidi & Benji paired together with a pop or hip-hop routine.

I'd be really surprised if Dmitry and Natalie aren't both gone next week.

I'm really disappointed. I expected a lot more from Natalie.

I still think that it sucks that Musa and Natalie were stuck with "Promiscuous" which IMHO is a big bag of suck -- it's not nearly so much fun as a dance number as "2 Much Booty (in da Pants)" -- while Ivan gets to dance to Annie Lennox.

(Side note: Yes, Ivan has improved, but think about what number could have been if Allison had been dancing it with Travis.)

Musa and Natalie really, really got screwed by that routine.

To clarify my earlier post -- I adore Musa, but I don't think that he's good enough yet to have beaten either Benji (who has put in some amazing performances) or Travis (who has not put in the performance quality I'd like to see, but clearly has tons of talent and obviously has good training).

I don't know if they would let people on the show more than once. But it would be very cool to see Musa come back next year as a guest soloist.

Thanks. I haven't practiced listening to songs and identifying the rhythm very much, as you can probably guess.

Thumbs up Wcs

Regarding Benji. Didnt realize he was a WCS champ. West Coast Swing is such a great dance and pretty darn difficult to master but a blast to learn. Absolutely beautiful when executed well and a ton of fun. A real eye catcher on the dance floor. I find that it is one of those dances where, if learned well, nearly all other dances become easier to pick up.

This routine is one of my favorites. Click on the video for the classic performance.

I was really liking Natalie, but like Nigel said, she was working the sex kitten too much. I like her personality though, she's pretty funny. I can't wait for Dimity to go. Like Jobeth said, he's just like last season's Artemis. Put a shirt on please. I just don't see his sex appeal, AT ALL. I thought Martha looked pretty damn hot in her dance. She and Travis are a good pair. They're goofy and fun together, but they're really put on a good show when it's show time. I'm really enjoying this show.

It's like I don't even know you. I loved Artim and as far as I'm concerned, Dimitri can just throw all his shirts away and I'd be perfectly happy.

Oh, shoot.

I liked Musa. Ashlee I was indifferent to.

I'm interested to see how far Heidi and Benji go. They're cousins, if it hasn't already been mentioned, and as a completely hetero woman, I feel comfortable in saying I cannot take my eyes off Heidi when she dances.

She's just got so much energy and expression.

Waaaaahhhhh, I loved Musa!!!! Ok, ok, he might not have been the greatest dancer, but he was HOT HOT HOT. And this last dance was one of his best. I hate when a contestant leaves after putting in an improved performance. I loved Artem too, but Dimitry? eh.

Had to agree with <spit> Nigel about a lot of stuff this week - especially Heidi and the Cabbage Patch thing.

I have a love/hate thing about this part of the show. Honestly, I love all the dancers and am just sad every week when someone has to go!

I'm a hetero woman, but I find Heidi fascinating. Remember when Benji had to dance for his life to stay on the program and he partnered with Heidi? She definitely outshone him in that dance!

I was cooking in the kitchen while they were dancing to that and that song made me dance around. It was pretty groovy!

I just looked on itunes and couldn't find a Tom Jones version, but there was one by Jim West that soudned exactly like it. The Tom Jones version was karaoke.
