TiVo for MRV only
Greetings,
I've got a couple of HDVR2s doing the 6.2 MRV dance. I'd like to add a third TiVo to the mix, but all I want it to do is play MRVs from the other two. No phone line, no satellite, no big disk(s). Just a box to MRV from the two big guns.
Doable? Which would be my least expensive option?
Thanks,
Tim ==

Yes. Use any DTivo except the R10. Buy it from Ebay for < $50. You'll need an access card, any access card, but it doesn't need to be subscribed.

Thank you much, sir. Very nice to hear from the guy that made it so easy for us to get the most from our boxen.
I expect I'll Zipper and enhance the thing and be done with it. Will I ever be hassled by "no subscription" nags?

No hassles. Superpatch will take care of that. You'll get a little notification that you tivo is no subscribed, but as soon as you hit tivo central, it will go away. If you're using it for an MRV server, you won't notice that anyway.

Whelps...I won an auction on an HDVR2 for $36 shipped. None too shabby if I say so myself. But, it was packed poorly, so it was a little banged up when I got ahold of it. No worries! I certified the 40G drive with PowerMax, copied my hacked 6.2 image onto it, and away we go!
The "No Program Guide Data" banner is displayed at the bottom of the screen if I go anywhere that requires guide data. Will this ever be a problem for an MRV-only server? The TiVo isn't going to lock me out of Now Playing in a couple of days, is it?
Another question: the reciever included a P4 card. Would there be any benefit to hooking everything up, calling D* to activate the card on my account, disconnecting the TiVo, and then calling back to say I'm shelving the box for a while? Some day in the future I may want to make this box see the birds, and I wonder if a little work now might make things easier thWhelps...I won an auction on an HDVR2 for $36 shipped. Another interesting thing - after a few minutes of idle time, the reciever pops up the Satellite Info screen and starts sniffing for the birds. I can get out of it into DirecTv Central without any problems (just poke the TiVo button), but...is there any way to make it stop doing this short of hooking up the coax?
Last question for the moment: the reciever included a P4 card. Some day in the future I may want to make this box see the birds, and I wonder if a little work now might make things easier then. Another thing is that I kind of want to make sure that the P4 is good before I leave feedback for the seller...or does it matter if the P4 is good or not...?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Nope, shouldn't be a problem.

No, I don't think there's any reason to do that...and you might end up extending your D* commitment if you do. I'd leave it be.

I haven't found a way to do this yet.
