Volume issues-DVR40 and recordings

Hi all,

I used to have an older Samsung DirecTiVo. It was 100% flawless. I moved on and ended up with an R15, which didn't work worth a darn and then I replaced that with a Hughes DVR40.

The only beef I have with the DVR40 is that the recorded/playback volume is very low, while the live TV volume is SUPER loud at the same level. So every night I ping pong back and forth between volumes-extra high for Live TV and Extra low for recordings.

Any thoughts here?

I use the digital(fiber) output into my receiver.

Sam

Is the live tv audio also from the digital connection? I'm thinking your amplifier is playing sound from your tv's L/R outputs and the Tivo's sound through the digital connection.

Another thing with digital output it may be encoded to play on a multiple speaker setup and you're hearing just part of the total output because of the way your amp and speakers are set up.

I think I'll move over to an analog connection and see if that works out better.

At my old place, with the Samsung, I used the optical out and it was fine. There, I had everything set to multiple audio channels(though I didn't use rear fill) and had a sub connected.

Here, it's just stereo, no sub, no center, still no rears. The receiver is set to stereo only and the DVR40 is set to not accept a Dolby Digital input, but I still think that this might be the problem.

THanks,

Sam

If you're listening through the same connections and settings with live and recorded, they should be identical. After all, it is never really live, it is buffered.

No matter what, you are getting sound and picture from the hard drive.

Were you watching the same program on the same channel? Sometims there are volume differences between channels.
