Dolby 5.1 question w/HD-TIVO

I have a DD5.1 compatible receiver w/optical inputs but it's only currently running 2.1 speakers. If I connect my Digital out from the HD DVR to my RX will I LOSE the 3 other channels or will they just "blend in" with the 2.1 speakers? I can configure the rcvr for just 2 front spkrs and sub but don't know what will happen to the audio on the 3 non-used channels if I hookup the optical connection.

Depends on how your reciever handles it.

It should have a 2 speaker output where you don't lose anything.

Arghhh .. it won't even allow me turn 5.1 on without having all 5 speakers installed.
