teleneting a file to a tivo

I have 2 series tivos that are wireless networked. I downloaded a file to add a different guide to the tivo menu, which has the remote codes for a sat receiver so the guide will be correct on the tivo.
The instructions are to FTP the filename.tcl script to the tivo, usually into the /var/hack directory.
Then you would telnet to the tivo and cd /var/hack/tivoish source filename.tcl
loadcodes ctrl+c out and wait for reboot.

I have installed larger hard drives on both of them but I dont have a clue how to telnet or ftp to the tivo. Do I need to install some extra software on the Tivo hard drives? Can someone point me in the right direction or tell me where to look?

The instructions you found assume that you have made internal, unofficial modifications to the TiVo which allow such access. Start by reading in the "Underground" section of this forum.
