I wasn't planning on watching this, but I'm glad I did. There was a lot I had obviously forgotten.

I watched it - nice way to catch up on some details I had forgotten since the last season ended. I'm looking forward to the new season - looks like another 12 episode season (counting the premiere as 2 since it is 2 hours.
Was the special really on NBC? I assumed it was on USA, but it would be nice to see that sort of extra exposure.

I watched it. Good refresher. I especially liked the fact that all the shots were in HD. Shows that have the material if they want to show it in HD.

TiVo caught this for me thanks to my long-forgotten 4400 season-pass! Yay, TiVo!
I haven't seen it yet, is it a clip-show, or is there any new material?

All clips, but a great summary as intro to the new season.

Yeah, it's a good catch-up. Last night I watched the last season finale again...it really got pretty good toward the end of the season after a good start but a weak middle.

It's also being repeated a bunch of times on one of the cable channels.
I only saw the first season via DVD.. will rent the others some time.

I missed the showing on NBC (in HD, unfortunately) but set up an SP last night on USA, which included one of the re-airings of the catch-up special.
But, I'm still not sure if I want to jump into it now, starting with the special, or just go back and watch it all from the beginning on DVD. How many seasons are currently out on DVD? Any recommendations as to which way to go?

It was fairly uneven in the beginning - "monster of the week" a la X-Files mostly, after the first establishing episodes. Then it picked up again and got more into the ongoing storylines for the most part. I found it very entertaining, and I think you might enjoyt it - but for the sake of being able to follow the story, this catch-up episode was sufficient, it covered everything of importance. You'd also get to see Lexa Doig in four episodes if you watched the series instead of just the special.

I haven't watched the special yet, but since I really can't remember anything other than the overall plot, I'm hoping that it goes in depth enough to bring me back up to speed. Usually, when they cut these shows, they know what plots to include and highlight so people will be able to follow the new season without having seen the previous ones. I would bet that you'll be just fine if you watch the Special and then start with the new ep this weekend. You can always come in the threads here and ask us if anything doesn't make sense.

I recorded the marathon of 4400 on 6/4. Would I be better off watching those "essential" episodes, or just this special, in preparation to recording and viewing Season 3? I don't want to waste my time on too many episodes if it's mostly filler.

I don't know which eps were shown in the marathon, and the titles would be meaningless as I've mostly forgotten everything that happened in S2 anyway. However, if you have time, and since you have them already, you may as well watch them. It certainly couldn't hurt.

There's not _that_ many episodes to catch up on. The first season was only 6 episodes, and the second was 12. The catch up show did cover the big picture, but there are a lot of details that were left out. It was a good refresher, but I'd say it would be better to TiVo season 3 and save it for when you are really caught up.

I think the essential episodes were more important than the one-hour special. The special gets the point across in an hour but the essential episodes went into more detail...detail that really needs to be known. Plus, the one thing I didn't like about the special was it showed everything kind of out of order. It made it look like Kyle turns himself in before the 4400 disease is even mentioned.
But, like has been mentioned, there aren't that many episodes in the entire series. Season one was more like a mini series and the DVD set only contains 2 DVDs. I'm not sure how many discs are in season 2, but you can watch both seasons in one weekend if you wanted to...like, say, this weekend for instance. Then you'll be 100% caught up before they air the season 3 premire this sunday

Thanks, didn't realize it was only 18 episodes. Considering we still have most of our shows from May still to watch, we probably wouldn't be starting this right away anyway. But maybe on the plane to Hawaii and back later this month.

The New York Post TV reviewer gave "The 4400" 2.5 stars. He bemoaned the "fact" that they haven't revealed that the 4400 "were abducted by aliens and given these powers to conquer the Earth, which would be cool -- but it doesn't look like any answers will be forthcoming for a while" (or words to that effect).
He obviously hasn't watched a single second of the second season, as it's been very clearly stated who abducted the 4400 and why. Numerous times.
I hate TV reviewers who don't even bother to watch the show they're reviewing.
