You need to have a network. Therefore, you need to buy a router -- either wired or wireless.

Connect the router to your modem.

Then you need to connect both the TiVo and the computer to the router. If you want to go wireless, you need wireless adaptors for both the computer and the TiVo (TiVo sells their own for use with the TiVo which is very good). If you want to go wired, you need to get a USB-to-ethernet adaptor so that you can plug the network cable into the TiVo.

TiVo.com has plenty of detailed information about this.

Good luck!

You don't have to get wireless adaptors for both the computer and the TiVo. You can run a cable from the router to the computer and go wirelss from the router to the TiVo and vise-versa.

True -- you can go wired for the computer and wireless for the TiVo. That's what I do. It's easier, and because most people have their router and modem right near their computer, it's a short and easy cable connection. Most wireless routers have ports for wired connections.
