What Tivo's are available today?
I can not get a DirectTivo or a dual tuner.
Today I went to Best Buy and all they could offer is
an 80-hour stand alone.
Are there still combo Tivo units anywhere?
Is Tivo getting out of the hardware biz?
Thanks, Jill

TiVo is not getting out of the hardware business, DirecTV is just getting away from TiVo. DirecTV decided to develope their own DVR and have since stopped selling TiVos.
If you had cable instead of DirecTV you could actually get the newly released Series 2 DT, which is a dual tuner standalone unit for cable. But if you need a DirecTiVo you'll have to buy them from somewhere online that still has them in stock. (like Weaknees)

I'm still seeing HDTV/DIRECTV/TiVos at bestbuy. I saw some there a few days ago.
You forgot to mention that the Series 2 DT Dual tuner TiVo can only record 2 basic cable channels at the same time or 1 Digital cable channel and 1 basic cable channel at the same time.

When you say "I CAN NOT get a DirecTivo or a dual tuner." does that mean you can't find one or that you can't use one?
If it's simply that you can't find one then go to a different store or order one on line. Circuit City sells the new DT units, and as pointed out above Weaknees.com sells the DirecTiVo units.

By combo do you mean a DVD Recorder with TiVo?

I am replacing a dead Toshiba.
Tivo has said I can NOT transfer a sub. to a dual tuner or a DirecTivo.
I hope that explains it better.

Certainly you can't transfer a subscription to a DirecTiVo since they don't really use the TiVo subscription model, but what reason were you told that you cannot transfer a subscription to a dual tuner? What kind of subscription are you trying to transfer? Oh, you can buy a dual tuner from a store and transfer a subscription to it. If you buy a TiVo directly from TiVo you cannot transfer a subscription to it. What do you mean by a "combo" unit?
You are really not communicating your situation very well, try using more detail.

O.k.
I will try.
I had a Toshiba DVD Player/Tivo combo. I had just put a lifetime sub on it some weeks back when Tivo announced they were getting rid of Lifetime subscriptions. The machine died this week (along with many machines just like it apparently ) My machine was covered under a Best Buy replacement plan, and when we took it in to be repaired, they came back to us and said it was not worth replacing, we would have to get a new one under their replacement plan. I called Tivo to see if the sub was transferable, they said it was...just not to a Dual tuner unit or a DiercTivo. When I went to the store to pick up another "combo" (Tivo with a Dvd player or recorder) Tivo unit, there are none available anywhere.
I hope this clarifies it. I guess the DVD/Tivo's were not very dependable, thus they are off the market. My only choice is a 80-hour Stand-Alone.....I guess.

They should transfer it if it's being replaced under a warranty plan. Send an email to TiVoOpsMgr (His email is in his profile)...

Bad guess, I've had a Pioneer DVR-810H since they were brand new, a few years now. Works great. I also have a Toshiba RS-TX20.
Sure, some people have problems, but most people don't. The market just changes, and the DVD units don't sell as well as non-DVD units, that's all there is to it really.
Humax still makes combo units, and they're basically the same as the Toshiba.

That's true. A Pioneer DVR-810H has been the only DVR I've owned which completely died from HD failure. I sold it cheap to an AV Forum member who replaced the HD.
Too bad! The limited DVD recording features meshed well with the limited free basic TiVo service!
I currently have a ReplayTV 4532 which has a bad spot on its HD and won't record reliably. That HD is pretty full and plays back fine though. I've gotten a pre-formatted replacement 320GB HD which will replace the bad one after the programs are transferred to another HD or DVD.
