HD Tivo: 1080i or 720p?

I just had my HD Tivo installed and it is hooked up to an Infocus IN76 via component cables. I have toggled back and forth between 1080i and 720p and cannot see a difference, but unfortunately, my projector goes through about a 5 second auto-adjustment with a blue screen up when I change the output mode.

Anyone have any insight into which I should ouput? The projector is a 720p projector, but in at least one review they stated that they obtained the best picture quality when they output 1080i to the projector.

I think you're spending too much time on it. If you can't see a difference, I say it doesn't matter.

You should save a conversion step, and output to the native display of your device.

My DLP is 720p. However, I put it on 720p only for standard-def and ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and FOX. For the channels that are native 1080i, I go ahead and output in that. I like to go ahead and give my TV the best possible feed for the 1080i sources and let it sort it out. I find it looks better. I didn't originally intend to do this, but when comparing it was what I clearly determined.

You'll probably find your TV has its own preferences.

You might want to post this to the HDTV TiVo Powered PVRs forum, which is specific for the HR10-250 DirecTV (HD TiVo). The people in that forum should be able to help you with your HD TiVo questions.

Best of luck!

If your projector's native resolution is 720p, then use that (there will be no downconversion necessary).

It seems the preference is 720p for animated films, and 1080i for almost everything else. For my HTPC, I would definitely go with 720p over 1080i, as interlaced video is terrible for text.

If your projector's native resolution is 720p, set your TiVo to output that.
