Smile Use TiVo without activation

I bought a TiVo and want to use it as a recording device without activating TiVo service. The GUIDED SETUP does not allow me to set up my new TiVo. Please help me.

I am real new to SA Tivo (had a DirecTivo for a while) and I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong) that it will not work unless it is activated with a valid subscription.

Series 2 TiVos, other than those which offer TiVo basic (Toshiba DVD/DVRs and Pioneer DVD/DVR devices), do not function without a subscription.

Despite the fact that an S2 Tivo can't be used w/o a sub, you should still be able to complete guided setup. Could you be more specific as to what happens during your attempts at guided setup? How far do you get? What message(s) do you get when you can't continue?

What DVRs/PVRs other than TiVo are available without subscription? I am looking for a device that records and plays at the same time or delayed.

I went about a half way. I got stuck when it needs to call up through phone line or broad band line. I did not connect anything because I was just trying to go through the set up.

Well, connect a phone line and you'll get through the second half of the setup.

While you will complete Guided Setup your DVR will be limited to playing Live TV -- you will be able to pause and rewind within the normal buffer. This up to 30 minutes on the current channel.

If it is new, it will have 7 days service. However if you want a free to use DVR, you made the wrong purchase, as most TiVos are service only.
