Hey, sorry to do this as I know similar questions pop up here every day, but I haven't been able to search and find the exact answer I'm looking for. Anyways,

I'm considering getting the tivo deal off of the website, since $220 for a box and a year of service doesn't seem too bad. Like many newbies on this site, I'm having a problem with the landline issue, but mine is a little different. I'm a college student and I can do the landline configuration at home over the summer or something, but would I need a landline again to reconfigure it at my apartment (1000 miles away) or could I use the wifi/ethernet option? Alternatively, could I reconfigure the box at home right before leaving?

Also, I keep hearing something about a series 3 tivo being released this summer. Is this a for sure thing to happen this summer? I'm trying to gauge when to buy one.

Series 3 will most likely be later than summer. Unless you have an HDTV though, you really do not need it. The new "duel tunner" (sorry

) series 2 should be out by then if you are still a SD kind of guy.

Newer Series 2 TiVo's (I think with the 7.2.1 or later software) can make the initial call using a wired or wireless broadband connection. There is a way to look on the box to see if this is possible with the particular TiVo within, but I forget what to look for (and no the version # isn't printed, I just checked mine which was bought in January).

If the TiVo you end up buying has the older software, you can make the initial landline call at home, but will need to redo Guided Setup over broadband once you get to your dorm room.

Series 3, if/when it's released this year, will likely carry an exorbitant price tag, certainly more than the $220 deal you speak of. The dual-tuner Series 2 sounds more promising but again likely to be considerably more expensive.

Sure wish TiVo was around when I went to college, maybe I would have gotten better grades!

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Once you've made the initial connection via dialup over phoneline, any time you move you can run the Guided Setup again to change your configuration without using the phone line. Its basically for the first time. After that, you should be good.

I think it may be after you've connected for the SECOND time. I believe the first call just gets account status and program updates, while the second one typically updates the software. This is all assuming you buy a box with the old software on it, by the way. TiVos with the newest software are networkable out of the box.

Haha, I think it just may do the opposite, since once I have my tivo there will be good things to watch on TV at 3AM, which along with my computer will further distract me from my studies. Oh well, at least i'll flunk out happy
