Just buy an extended warranty
I am sure the retail stores for any recent purchase of a Series 2 will allow them to do a return and rebuy, and add on a warranty.
'
It appears any Series 2 with Lifetime and a retail warranty, will allow the lifetime sub to transfer to the new box down the road.
Perfect criteria for those noobs who recently purchased. Later when S3 is available, the Warranty cant fix it attitude, can work in your favor.
3/15 is the last day though,,, today

The Series2 is not going away, even once the Series3 comes out, it will be a high-low product mix. So good luck getting a S3 on an S2 warranty, there will be S2s for some time to come.

Fraud's not a good thing ... but an extended warranty might be, if you are considering selling a Series 2. I wouldn't pay $30 for a 4 year warranty (Best Buy) if I was keeping the box myself, but would consider it if I was considering selling the box <4 years down the road.

Bear in mind that proof of extended warranty may be required, and when you're transferring from one model to a completely different model, we look to see if the previous model is still available. We offer extended warranty transfers only as a courtesy; if people abuse this courtesy, then we will be forced to revoke this exception.

So you're saying that this nefarious scheme could work. Now tell me, will Jerry's TiVo Car likely be the only TiVo available sometime within the next four years?
Also, would your rather work for Brian Roberts, Steve Jobs, or Rupert Murdoch?
Just wondering.

Don't take this the wrong way, but why do you even do this today? Shouldn't the retailer be paying Tivo something for the lifetime on the replacement unit?
