Tivo, ICS and internet

I have recently shut off my home phone service and went and bought a USB NIC for my Series 2 Tivo, I do not have a router, I use a Windows XP w/SP2 box with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to serve the internet to my various computers. I have tried everything to get the tivo to connect to the network adn it keeps telling me that it cannot find the router. I have checked the cable with my laptop and the laptop aquires an IP address in mere seconds. I really need this to work as I can no longer afford to have a landline just for the tivo.

Please help!

Tivo is not a windows machine, and ICS is not DHCP. You could try assigning a static IP to the tivo through the setup menus (try 192.168.0.100 with gateway 192.168.0.1).

I did that, It says it cannot find the router and/or gateway machine. I have DHCP and DNS turned on in ICS and it works fine for any other device I attach to the network.

Well, like I said, ICS is not a real router. It works well with windows machines, but often doesn't play well with others. (big surprises from Microsoft...) You probably need to get a real router for tivo to talk to.

well there are plenty of posts with people saying they have used ICS to connect and it worked so im hoping someone who has done this will read my post and maybe tell me what im doing wrong if anything. I really do not wish to change my whole network just for this to work as it should be able to work as it is.

you should just buy a home router. they are cheap and easy to setup. ICS is crap, i used it for a few months on my home network, but after having long delays, connnectivity issues and having to replace the power supply in the computer running ICS, i figured it was better just to use a device that is dedicated for that.
routers will let you do much more than ICS can, i doubt it will set you back more than $35 and it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to setup on your network. and it will work with your tivo, plus you can have wireless access now

Routers are def. worth it. They're also just another level of crap for hackers to penetrate. Not superduper tough, but will block out amateurs.
