help with TiVo desktop

I like to squeeze every bit of processing power possible out of my system (this is especially important with games). My pet peeve is programs that automatically start with windows that don't give you the option to disable it.

Is there a way to prevent tivo desktop from starting with windows, including tivo server, beacon etc. etc. etc., and just use the thing when I want to transfer files from the TiVo to my computer.

I mean, is there really a reason why it needs to be running constantly running when I only need to use it every once in a while?

1. Right click on the TiVo icon in the system tray.
2. Click on "TiVo Server Properties.
3. Uncheck the box next to "Start the TiVo Server When I log on to Windows.

You can actually adjust things like cache file size and processor usage here, too. It's quite handy.

No, it's not. It's not that I can't block it from starting with my system. I know my way around msconfig, ini files, etc. but even if I do that, without them running in the background, the progam won't work when I DO want it to. What I want to do is have the program and its associated services run ONLY when I tell them to. There's gotta be someone who knows how to do this. I don't see why this part of the design was put in place to begin with!

I don't know which version of Windows you have, but if you can get to Services (Administrative Tools > Services), Tivo Beacon is configured there for "Automatic startup". You can set it to "Manual startup", so it will never start up on its own. Then create a shortcut to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\TiVo Shared\Beacon\TiVoBeacon.exe" (that's the default location) and run that when you want to start it.

I'm NOT recommending you edit your registry, but it appears that TivoTransfer is configured to run as a service through there. It could be tied to the TivoDesktop service so I wouldn't go deleting registry keys. But if you want to find it, open your registry and search for "TivoTransfer". You should find it under "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" (both HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_USERS). If you must edit your registry, ALWAYS back it up first!

I haven't explored it enough to know about the Tivo Transfer service (maybe it starts with Beacon?).
DING DING DING! Now the only question is why the heck I didn't think of that on my own. Thanks man.

Also, you can always click on Start, and Run and then type in: msconfig
Then, look under the startup tab and un-check everything that you don't want to start when Windows loads.
