NY Sportsnet

Has anyone heard anything about NY Sportsnet? They launch next month yet we've heard nothing.

Last I heard DirecTv and Sportsnet were "close to an agreement." I figure a deal will get struck by opening day.

I think it launches 3/16 so we probably wont know anything before then. I would imagine it will get picked up if for nothing else just to be able to provide Mets games for the MLBEI package.

Wouldn't you think they'd intend to cover preseason games, Dan?

I'd be surprised if they pick it up right at the start. I expect that they will be it up sometime in the middle of spring training, but definitely before the regular season starts.

I can live with that. Just give me the regular Season games and all home games in HD and I'll be a happy Mets fan.

hmmm, i wonder if it will be sportspack-only, or, like YES, part of my basic regional sports coverage.

Since it will be carrying the bulk of the Mets games, Directv would be pretty stupid not to make it part of the New York regional sports coverage, as they did when YES came along. Trust me, they don't want to lose every local Mets fan to cable in one big swoop.

I'm a Yankees fan, and even I understand that.

Mets network, Cablevision reach deal

BY NEIL BEST

SportsNet New York and Cablevision have reached a tentative agreement for the cable giant to carry the Mets' new regional sports network, a person familiar with the negotiations said Sunday night.

No contract has been signed, and it is not clear precisely when one will be, but it appears almost certain that when SNY launches March 16, Cablevision's 3 million customers, most of them on Long Island, will have access to the channel.

The March 16 fare will feature a Mets-Braves spring training game. Opening Day is April 3.

It had been believed that SNY was closer to a deal with DirecTV than with Cablevision, but in recent days, it became increasingly evident that there would be nothing like the 2002 battle between Cablevision and YES that kept the Yankees off Cablevision for an entire season.

YES set a precedent by getting placed on expanded basic cable in 2003. Three years later, SNY and Cablevision primarily were left to haggle over money rather than any fundamental issues.

SNY is partly owned by Comcast and Time Warner, so it immediately could count on distribution from those outlets.

Cablevision, which until last year showed the Mets on its MSG and FSNY channels, would have risked alienating the many Mets fans in its market if it did not carry SNY from the start.

DirecTV most likely will fall into place once the Cablevision agreement is finalized. Customers of the other major satellite service, Dish Network, might have a longer wait.

There now will be four regional sports networks in Cablevision's expanded basic package -- YES, SNY, MSG and FSNY.

This is my issue. I receive NESN, YES, FSNE here in central CT. To get MSG/FSNY I had to buy the sportspack. However, the next town over gets the NY channels. Not fair I say. However, NYSportsnet will be available in my town on Comcast. I can't go back to cable though.

You do realize that the cause of your situation is Fox Sports, right? Since Fox is carrying teams from two markets, each of which claim you as a customer, they determine which channels you actually get on a given outlet. In the case of YES, and NYSN once it gets on DirecTV, the channel provider has no competing interests and so wants its signal delivered to the entire region it claims.

This is actually part of the motivation for these team specific sports channels - by increasing the number viewers of Yankees and Mets games, the teams make more money, and collect more fans.

I didn't know this. Hopefully I'll receive SportsNet NY and finally be able to see the Mets. It's been almost 5 years since I've seen them on a regular basis. That being said, I haven't missed much .

As a Jets season tix holder, they sent me something inviting me to a launch party for NY Sportsnet.

I think it is this weekend (maybe even today?) on 51st Street in Manhattan at around 1PM, I think. Since I can't go, I tossed the info - sorry!

Any news on if its being picked up by TWC? are the Mets not going to be on WPIX anymore?

Indeed it is. Channel 26 in Brooklyn. Not sure what the HD channel is.

They'll still have some games on WB11. I forget the number. I think it's about 25 games on WB (mostly Sunday games). The rest on SportsNetNY, except for the occasional national broadcasts on ESPN and FOX.

New York has 9 pro sports franchises. 7 have contracts with Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) for regular season games - the NFL teams, obviously, don't.

Mets - SNY
Yankees - YES
Islanders - FSNY
Rangers - MSG
Devils - FSNY
Knicks - MSG
Nets - YES

During baseball season, FSNY and MSG are not going to have very much to show. But, in the winter, FSNY has the Islanders and Devils, and MSG has the Rangers and Knicks. So, it'll be hard for them to merge.

For years, there has been the problem in NY of the overflow games, and Cablevision putting them on the Metro channels and not making those games available without subscribing to the entire channel, which was essentially useless outside of Long Island. Now, with four channels and the Mets off the Cablevision-owned channels, that problem sort of goes away. With no Mets games to conflict with, it's less likely that more than two of the four winter teams (other than the Nets, who are on YES) will play on the same night.

Getting nervous

I sent the following email to DirecTv today:

What is the status of the new Mets channel (SportsNetNY)? The season starts in less than a week and we still have no official word of whether or not DirecTv will carry it. Also, if you will carry it, will we get it in HD as well?

And received the following response:

Thanks for writing. While we don't carry SportsNet New York at this time, we are in negotiations with the network and we hope to be adding it to our programming lineup soon.

I realize that you are anxious to know if this station will be available in time for opening day. Unfortunately I do not have any additional information today but we hope to know more soon.

Thanks again for writing and check back at DIRECTV.com this spring for the latest news about SportsNet New York on DIRECTV.

Sincerely,

Claudette

Not that it affects me, but I happened to notice last night that it looks like DirecTV has Channel 625 all set and ready to go for SNY -- I guess they're just waiting for the final signatures until they throw the switch and activate it.

(I noticed because they also seem to have done some serious rejiggering of the regional sports network "alternate" channels -- I had something match a wishlist on a channel number I had never seen before.)

In there, you'll notice channel 657 has been set up for SportsTime Ohio, the Cleveland Indians' new TV network that has yet to be officially announced for D* viewers.

Local media is reporting that a deal is "likely" for STO perhaps as soon as Monday. They already hooked up with Dish Network, which is kind of a surprise given Dish's history with RSNs...

I saw that as well. The guide data showed the Mets vs Nationals but as an RSN, not SportsNetNY. The only way I was able to see SportsNetNY was when I added channel 625 to my Favorite Channels list in the channel settings menu. I've scheduled it to record channel 625 today and hope I get it.

Of course, if they do actually sign the agreement, there should also be an HD channel (somewhere in the 90's). If that's the case, I guess I'll call my wife to record it there instead.

If they don't, I hate to think about dropping DirecTv, but I may have to. The Mets are my team. It boggles my mind that they can have such a short memory. They picked up plenty of customers when Cablevision did this with the Yankees (and before with the MSG./FSNY problems years earlier). To risk losing customers back to cable is insane.

I want the name of the imbecile running the negotiations for DirecTv.

"Negotiations between SportsNet New York and DirecTV were ongoing last night, with no deal in place but officials still hopeful of striking one in time for today's Mets opener.

After signing a carriage agreement with Cablevision on March 23, officials of SNY, the Mets' new network, were optimistic about having a deal with DirecTV, the market's biggest satellite TV company, by Opening Day. But with no announcement by last night, many Mets fans were left in limbo and frustrated." -- Newsday
