What will happen if I try to...

take a show recorded in HD from my HD DirecTivo and record it onto a DVD recorder that is made to work with regular (non-HD) DirecTivo's? I know that it will not record the show onto the DVD in HD (yet), but will it record it to the DVD at all in standard definition? Does anybody know of a specific DVD recorder that can do this if it is possible?

Thanks.

Yes, but I believe you will need to use the HD Tivo in 480i mode and use the S-Video or composite outputs to any DVD recorder. I do not do this specifically for DVD recording but I use the HD Tivo in 480i mode for similiar reasons.

once in a while, when burning a DVD, i still forget to set the tivo to 480i and i check my connections over and over until finally i remember.

no 480i = no picture.

thanks... one more folow up... so you're saying that I can record a show while the Tivo is set to 1080, but when it comes time to record onto the DVD then change the Tivo to the 480i setting and it should record ok? Thanks.

It doesn't matter what output resolution the TiVO is using when recording. The TiVO records at whatever resolution is broadcast.

The output resolution matters for output only. Since the DVD recorded only has inputs that support 480i, you have to set the TiVo to output at 480i when recording to DVD.
