Question New Tivo & D-Link Wireless Questions

D-Link router: DI-524 broadcasting on B/G with WEP & DHCP enabled

D-Link USB Adapter: DWL-G122 ver A2, FM: 1.02 (on the approved list for the 540)

Tivo: Series 2; R54040, S/W 7.2.1-oth-01-2-540; service level D:020706

So far, I've connected the box to my home theater system, gotten picture & sound, and updated to 7.2.1 via phone line. That part all went well. the problems are - you guessed it - with wireless networking.

The adapater is recognzied by Tivo, but the signal strength jumps wildly all the way from poor (1%) to excellent (100%). The distance from the adapter to the router is under twenty feet. My laptop shows 4 of 5 bars when placed several yards further away and in a straight line from the Tivo to the adapater.

Is Tivo showing the actual signal strength or is there a bug which is causing the signal strength to fluctuate? (I read in one of the forum posts that this was the case for another adapter, so I'm just wondering if maybe....)

I tried to read through as many forum postings as I could on wireless and have tried various combinations of power cycling the Tivo, cable modem, and router as well as trying both upper and lower USB connectors on the Tivo, all without success. I'd appreciate any other ideas as I've spend a chunk of today trying to get the &$*&^*(# thing to work.

I have the same situation, also using a D-Link DI-524. I've considered replacing it, but I want to try to narrow down the problem. Even when my signal strength is 100 percent I am unable to connect. I have disconnected a cordless phone and that has not helped. I tried using Netstumbler to see if other wireless networks were causing conflicts, but it apparently doesn't work with my set up. I will try disconnecting a wireless mouse and see if that helps. I use a Humax, so when I have time I will call them and ask for a level two technician. They are the ones with wireless experience and they are only there until 9 p.m. Good luck.

Thumbs up Progress!

In the words of Kelly Bundy, "Topeka -- I have fount it!"

Very late last night I tried turning off WEP at my router, and changed Tivo network settings accordingly. I connected easily and it worked like a charm.

This morning I'm trying to get WEP to work, but so far without success. What's surprising me is that, in going through the setup, sometimes I'm brought through a page where I'm asked if the WEP is hex or alpha and sometimes I'm not. Also, when it fails, I get a "can't find DHCP server" error (which is not the error msg I'd expect if the WEP password wasn't right or something).

Got any clues on WEP? Send'em my way.

(Yes, I have tried alpha and hex passwords)

Reading further in the forum, I found that I can turn off the broadcasting of the SSID and achieve and equal/better result in terms of security. I've elected to do that in lieu of bashing my brains out furter on WEP. I've got TivoToGo loaded and now I'm off to buy a lifetime subscription!

Turning SSID broadcast off is not security at all, your SSID still radiates in the clear, just not as often. Netstumber will find your network and allow entry with ease. Turning SSID off is like painting the front door to match your house, you know it's got to be there, but you can't see it from the street. With WEP off the front door is still unlocked.

If using the text entry screen be sure to use upper case for character based digits.

Make sure you use hex key number 1 from your router settings pages.

If you are using a MAC address filter on your router, did you remember to put the MAC address of the TiVo adapter into its allow list?

Sometimes with D-Link routers you need to change the wireless authentication setting. Play with it to see if one works better than the other. If I recall correctly, B adapters prefer "shared key" and G adapters prefer "open".

Good luck,

I ordered a DLINK DWL-G122. Question: With SSID broadcast turned off on the router, will the TIVO show that network as able to join?

No you will have to type it in yourself. Be careful when doing so to get your capitalization correct. If you misspell, it won't find the network.

I wish I had found this posting 6 hours ago. I searched gateway not found because that is what the tivo kept telling me. Mine started working too when I turned off the WEP. Have any of you with the dlink 524 gotten yours to work with it on?
