Clarification of locals in Mpeg-4
Are the locals offered on the new MPEG4 satellites the same 4 major network locals, or are they adding the UPN, WGN, PBS, and other locals that make up the full SD local package?

For now just the major 4 (ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX). My guess is PBS, UPN and WB will come in a year or so (nothing announced as of yet). There's no HD programming on UPN right now anyway.

UPN at least USED to have HD programming (at least when ST: Enterprise was on).
I am not familiar with their 2005/2006 programming list, so i can say if they STILL have HD programming.

I was thinking more sports related. WGN shows Cubs/Sox home games in HD, and I thought I read that channel 26 would be going HD this year for home MLB baseball as well.
I currently get OTA well on all channels (even the dreaded channel 2), So I'm thinking through my options when the new HD PVR comes out.

Everybody Hates Chris is broadcast in HD.
They have several programs that are broadcast in HD.
In Atlanta WUPN does a much better job of managing their digital/HD signal. I have never seen them forget to switch back to HD after a commercial break unlike ABC.

Hmmm... that would be a first if WCIU (channel 26) would be broadcasting the MLB games in HD (it would be nice, since their SD signal is so bad that you would rather listen to it on the radio... )
The newer HD recievers will still accept and OTA HD signal. So for those that you can't get via SAT, you can get via OTA... IF the MPEG-4 quality is good, then I will record it that way to get the better space usage out of the system...

So when you tune to your local HD channels(like 4.1) you get them from the MPEG4 sat. For people that have MPEG2 HD channels like LA, when you change the channel to say NBC HD 83 that would be mpeg2 correct? So you actually get 2 diffrent HD feeds if you live in a city like LA or NY.

For now, yes. Best guesses say that LA/NY MPEG2 feeds will go dark at the end of 2006/early 2007.
BTW, DirecTV/DishNetwork have absolutely NO plans of delivering local multicast channels (like, here in the Twin Cities, NBC offers their WeatherPlus channel on their second digital channel), and they're under no obligation to. They will only offer the main networks.

Everything but reality is in HD on UPN. One of the ironic advantages of having a low-rated network is that you are not saddled by shows that air for a long time, but debuted in SD, and still are delivered that way ("Scrubs", "That 70s Show").

I really doubt that the MPEG2 LA/NY feeds will go dark that early. I for one would be really upset if I lost my HD feeds that soon. Why you ask?
Because even if DirecTV should somehow get my locals up (DMA=156), I doubt I'd see them in HD. Currently, we have four stations broadcasting digitally, with five networks. ABC, and PBS are the only ones carrying HD. Our Fox affiliate is multicasting our UPN station and CBS is not in HD. That leaves NBC (low power), WB (cable only). Our local cable company (TWC) carries ABC and PBS in HD, CBS is on their digital tier but not HD, NBC is coming from Elmira. The others, forget about it. So you can see my dilemma.

It has been stated that PBS HD will be added in the NY market sometime this month. My guess is that it will be only in MPEG4, but not sure. Still no UPN or WB.

I'm surprised you're not watching Veronica Mars.
