Is the recording from HD HBO channel as good as a dvd?

I just recorded the Titanic on my Hd tivo from the HBO HD channel. Is the sound and picture supposed to be as good as the dvd?

Thanks vid53

Picture should be better, sound should be pretty much the same. A lot of variables, though.

Assuming that the HBO HD broadcast was 1080i HiDef, then the video quality should be much better than a DVD (only 480p). Audio should be about the same since both are Dolby Digital 5.1. But, as Steve points out, there can be lots of other variables. Why do you ask?

But, if they used the DVD as the source.

I qualified my response because, while HBO HD should be 1080i, we know that DirecTV does some pretty heavy compression and the results may not be as good as they ought to be. That said, my viewing of the HD channels (primarily DIscovery HD and HDNET) show a picture noticeably better than the best DVDs.

I've recorded Titanic several times from HBO. Picture is great but they are not sending it with 5.1 sound. The DVD has awesome 5.1 sound. Has anyone recorded a version from HBO with 5.1 sound?
