TIVO + DVD burner question

Sorry if this has been asked. I searched but could not find anything.

Do any of the TIVO/ DVD recorders allwo you to burn a copy of a DVD you already own?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I know next to nothing about DVD recorders.

The short answer is "NO". I am assuming that you are talking about "backing up" commercial dvd's that you have purchased. Of course I can only speak as to the Toshiba and Humax's.

No, none of the TiVo DVD recorders will copy an existing DVD, and you can't copy from DVD to the drive.

Commerical DVD's are protected by an encryption scheme known as CSS. In order to be able to play a comercially produced DVD the CE manufacturer has to purchase a CSS license. The terms of the CSS license requires that the equipment manufacturer ensures that copy protection flags are preserved and that copy protected media is not copied.

how about copy the DVD to a VHS tape while editing out what you don't want then burn it to a DVD recorder, at least you won't have what you don't want on the DVD to a new copy onto the DVD

Is there a place to look for help on how to set up the tivo and dvd burner/vcr and stereo dvd?
We have a new system. We have a new tivo, a new dvd burner w/vcr and an old dvd player that connected the surround speakers.
My poor husband has been pulling hair out to try and figure out how to go in the back and what to connect to what to make it work.
Let me know if there is another thread/board to go to for help - or if anyone else has suggestions? he is fairly 'wire literate' so that is why we are a bit surprised.

We have a DVR/ DVD burner at church for our sound system and we are able to pull down commercial dvds to play for the service when needed. We also edit on the system and play from hard drive. I can't think of the unit, it was high end, not TIVO though

Have you tried recording the edited video back to a DVD? Tivo will let you record copy protected material, but it can't be saved to DVD or transfered with TivoToGo.

And to bnm81002 have you actually tried your suggestion? most VCR's won't sucessfully record copy protected DVD's
