Question Changing channels w/ DTV D11 box?

Direct tv just replaced my borked receiver with the newer D11 model. Problem is the new box doesn't have the low speed data cable port for changing the channels like the old one did.
Anyone have success hooking up their series 2 with the D11? The D11 only has a USB port on the back along with the phone port. I would rather not have to use the IR blaster if I can. I have never had very much success using it in the past.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

You might want to check the Tivo compatibility thread and ask the question there. I did a quick scan and didn't see any information about the D11 there yet ....

Is it possible the remote codes, if he DOES have to go IR, would be the same as those for other Direct receivers?

We've had reports that code 10074 works well for this model. I set up two for a relative just last week and it was very easy. Since there are no serial ports on that model, IR is the only option available.

If you want to bypass the recommended setup, you can manually program this IR code using the advanced setup method described here http://customersupport.tivo.com/know.../tv103302.htm?

I wonder if a USB to serial adapter would work? I can't put up a link for any of them, but it might be worth it for me to grab one at Fry's and see if it works. I already have the serial adapter from a previous box.

Yuo can try, but it is very doubtful it will work.

timex18, have you had a chance to try the adaptor? According to the TV Translator FAQ, it is possible to connect to the D11 receiver using an adaptor and computer, but they do not say if anyone has tried it with a TiVo.

EDIT: Fixed TV Translator FAQ URL.

I ordered an IOGEAR GUC232A. In fact, it's at the local Fedex location, but they won't deliver it or let me pick it up until next Tuesday (when it is scheduled to be delivered). BS, but I'm not in a big rush with the holidays.

To my surprise, after Fedex told me there was no way I was going to get my package before Tuesday, it showed up at our front door this afternoon. I had to run to Radio Shack to get a Female DB9 to Female DB9 gender adaptor so the IOGEAR GUC232A could connect to the TiVo serial cable. Unfortunately, it does not look like this is going to work. TiVo's automatic serial control testing failed and I also tried manually setting the serial control for all three options for a DTV receiver with no luck. Since I have read elsewhere that it is possible to send commands to the D11 via its USB port, my guess is that TiVo will need to make some changes in order for this to work.

EDIT: I just got off the phone with TiVo Technical Support. After spending a few minutes trying to explain that I was not trying to setup the D11 receiver with TiVo for the first time, and that I was not trying to network the TiVo either, the rep left me on hold for a few minutes to research the matter. When she returned, she told me that a search on her intranet told her that the D11 USB port and the Series2 serial port were not compatible; however, this is something that they were working on. After pressing her a little further she told me it was something that would be addressed with the "new" TiVo that is going to be released next year and that the current Series2 will not work.

The code Tivojerry gave works for the d11-500 for me.

P.S. Why is the blue light on the front like a miniature sun?? This annoys me every time I watch TV. Off to buy the electrical tape solution

Hi,

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I was wondering if anyone had any luck with this solution? I've been banging my head against the wall after work for a couple of weeks now!

If no-one has, has anyone tried wiring up the DB9 on the usb->serial adapter for loop back handshaking? I am going to give it a go this weekend.

I found a post on another forum indicating that you might need to coerce the adapter into thinking that flow control existed.

I'm unsure of forum rules or protocol so will not post the link to the other forum unless I'm told it's ok to do so.

Thanks
JC

USB Device that works with D11, S2

I'm not allowed to post URL's yet, but Google "Paterson Tech," and follow the first result to Paterson's web site. Look for the USB TV Translator, which connects from the USB slot on the back of the D11 to the end of the TiVo S2 serial cable. I got mine in the mail today, and it works great.
