Wireless Adapter Disappears after 7.1

I've had TIVO on my wireless network for a long time. After update to 7.1 and then 7.1a, it drops off the network, and I have to restart to get it to find the adapter again.

I've seen a couple other threads saying the same thing, but no reply from TIVO. What's up?

It's good to supply information in your signature such as:

Model, Connection Type, and Cable settings.

For example, mine would be:

Toshiba SD-H400, D-Link 122 Wireless USB, Comcast Basic (no box)

80-hour Series 2, LinkSys WUSB11 2.6, router is LinkSys BEFW11S4. Not sure why you'd care what cable settings I have but it's TVMAX/No box. The setup has worked fine up until 7.1a.

Now it gets to a point where it "can't find the wireless network". The adapter is green and blinking normally, but the TiVo has no IP address (because it expects to get one) and the network strength is 0. If I disconnect/reconnect the adapter and reboot the TiVo, it will find the network and everything will be hunky dory. The IP address will be filled in, the signal strength will be 97 to 100% as usual. But only for a short while. I think it lasted 2 days this last time.

Same thing here...

This problem is happening with me too!

Router: Linksys WRT54G
Adapter: Belkin F5D6050
TiVo: Series 2, v7.1

My experience has been exactly the same -- one day after 7.1 the wireless network just could not be found by the TiVo box. I futzed with the adapter a little, confirmed my network was still functioning, and then finally just restarted TiVo. The network appeared again, with excellent signal strength.

That was on the 15th, I just checked in on it again -- the last successful connection was on the 15th.

I started one of the earlier threads mentioned, but I have a Linksys WUSB 11 (purchased from TiVo) and a single drive upgraded Series 2 with 7.1a. No other issues with my wireless network.

Also had the same problem on ALL 3 of my SD-H400 on the day of or within two days of the 7.1 upgrade. Restarting would fix it sometimes and then they would lose it again.

I finally resorted to configuring the network settings on all 3 to fixed IP and haven't had a problem since.

I reported this problem to TiVo (2nd level support).

NEVER had a similar problem before 7.1

USB200M/BEFW11S4.

Same problem here also:

Linksys Router BEFW11S4
Linksys Wireless USB Adapter WUSB11 ver2.8

Seems to be able to find my IP address but it cannot find a gateway. Anyone got any solutions?

I have a feeling this is going to be really bad as I won't be able to connect up to TiVo for updates anymore. I guess I haven't connected to Tivo since I got my update on February 7. I'm running software version 7.1.01-2-240 on a Series 2 80 hr DVR

Yes - configure it with fixed IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS. If you don't know what they should be set to go to a pc on your network.

From the start menu choose run and type 'command'. A black DOS window will open.

Click in the window and type 'ipconfig /all' and hit enter. It will list all the network settings including subnet, gateway, and DNS. Write those down (except for the IP - that's the PC's IP).
Then go to the tivo Phone & network setup meny and note the tivo's IP address (assuming its working at the time). Edit the network settings using Static IP and enter the IP,subnet, gateway, and DNS addresses that you wrote down.

I configured mine fixed last night... and as of right now it's already fallen off the network.

So much for that! Who had that crazy idea?

Hey TiVoBill... any ideas? Looks like it doesn't matter which TiVo or adapter, but it looks like all of the routers are LinkSys B or G. Is there anything else we can turn on to help gather data?

Adding a "me too" post.

I have a Tivo 80 hr Sony unit. It was perfect on the network until 7.1/7.1a. I use the green checked Belkin F5D5050 USB to 100 Mbps ethernet adapter. That plugs in to a Linksys Game adapter via a crossover cable. The game adapter functions as a wireless ethernet bridge. WiFi is provided to the premises via a Belkin wirelese router/AP configured as an AP.

It might sound complicated, but it worked great until I requested and received the 7.1 software from Tivo. Don't get me wrong, I love the speediness program guide now (that's why I requested the update).

My Tivo drops off the network after about 24 hours (it may actually be less, but I check about once a day.) A reboot fixes it, but 24 hours later, the Tivo off the network again. Daily reboots aren't a long term fix. My Tivo is on a UPS and never needed reboots before.

For me, the easiest way to test whether the Tivo is on the network or not is to access Music and Photos. If "New Music from BestBuy" is in the list, networking is okay. If not, the Tivo does not see the network. When Tivo is not on the network, it doesn't get guide data updates.

I've tried both static IP address and network settings and also supplying the information from a DHCP server on my network. The result is the same in both cases, Tivo drops off the network within 24 hours of a reboot.

Tivo run's Linux, maybe they need to update the USB kernel module or something else related to the USB network module. I doubt Tivo is actually dropping it's IP configuration, probably just dropping support for USB after a period of time.

Is there any way I can help troubleshoot this or any other source of information I should check out?

Thanks!!
Brian

The same thing started happening with me last night on ONE of my two machines. Both are 240's with 7.1a-02-2-240. Both have wireless adapters with fixed IP addresses (no DHCP). The working machine has a D-link DWL-122; the flaky one has a DWL-G120 that I bought last Saturday. I've rebooted 4 or 5 times tonight but the wireless network just won't stay up.

I appologize if this is bad etiquette here (just tell me the right way to do it next time if I'm out of line...)

This looks like a bug or a trend that is affecting a lot of people. There are at least three threads that discuss network problems after the 7.x software upgrade.

Here are the three threads (which I will also post in the other threads) in hopes of letting everyone with the same problem know, so hopefully we can find a common solution.

So I am not alone.

This qualifies as a me too. I also got the 7.1a SW over the weekend. Tried to use TTG last night and it hung in the middle of an XFER. Tivo Desktop professes to not see the Tivo it was just transfering from. Tivo config says that wireless is hot and running but I did not confirm. I will do so ASAP and will ping over wireless.

I have a clue!

I use the Belkin F5D5050 USB to 100 Mbps Ethernet adapter. That connects to a Linksys WiFi game adapter via a crossover cable. This worked fine before the 7.1 software was installed.

I have found that I can consistently reproduce the "dropping off the network" problem with my Tivo and the Belkin F5D5050 adapter.

Basically, when Tivo boots up, networking works fine. However, if at any time, I power down the game adapter (which functions as a cheap wifi ethernet bridge) the Tivo drops off the network. That much is no supprise...

What is supprising, and incorrect behavior, is that when the game adapter is powered back up, Tivo does not get back online. Ethernet devices should be able to tolerate the link failing and should reestablish the link when it is available.

This definately looks like a Tivo driver (possibly Linux kernel) problem. For me it is related to the Belkin F5D5050. However, it appears others are having this problem and customer support has blamed their router. That is silly. If networking was okay before software changes, the malfunction shouldn't be blamed on a router or other network device.

The problem may be generalized that when a power cycle or other interruption occurs to the network, when that outage lasts several minutes, USB devices connected to the Tivo are unable to reestablish a link.

Tivo gurus, are you listening?

Another test and the result

Tivo will also drop off the network when the Ethernet cable plugged into the Belkin FD5050 USB Ethernet adapter is disconnected for 3 seconds and reconnected.

That is really unusual. The green link light on the Belkin USB adapter comes back on, but Tivo can no longer play Music from BestBuy, it is off the network at that point. It takes a reboot of the Tivo to get it back on the network.

I finally broke down and called support tonight. They told me that it must be a problem with my network, because I can connect to get the updates. They also said that a 60% signal was marginal and was probably my problem (!).

I patiently explained that everything had been working fine for months until the day that I got 7.1a, and that the reason that I could connect to get the updates is that I had to reboot every time this happened to get the network to show up again. But the problem wasn't on the Tech Support script, so it was obviously something that I was doing wrong. Grrrr.

By the way, I only have the problem when I try to do a TivoToGo transfer. If I don't do any transfers, everything is fine for days at a time, but a 1 hour transfer is guaranteed to make the wireless card disappear. Sometimes it shows up again after a few hours; more likely it will be lost until the machine is rebooted.

Interestingly, this only happens on one of my units; the other is fine.

Add me to the list. My old Series 2 (60hr version) with a USB 10/100 wired ethernet has worked flawlessly for the past 3 years. Today, I tried to view some pictures and found out that the network adaptor was not found. It just yesterday received the 7.1a-02-2-140 version. A reboot seems to have fixed it for now. It isn't just a wireless issue.

I received 7.1a-02-2-xxx a couple of days ago and my problem has gone away. The adapter has stayed connected since the installation reboot.

Is this a new update? I think it's what I now have and (fingers crossed) I haven't had to reboot for a couple of days....

Please post your software version in follow up messages.

[ OK, I didn't have it - message says I have received a service update today. Now at 7.1a-02-2-240 and still on the network...]

<bump> to keep this thread active... still hoping TiVo will let us know if they've figured anything out, or if we can give them any more information.
