P4 + Life = $650 after discount - Deal or no Deal?

I'm not totally jumping up and down about this deal, however adding 3 years service here for $40 is way better than risking 3rd party sales - and you can't buy that outside of Tivo.

We would like to upgrade our standard Premiere with Life to 4 tuners. Just not sure when to do it.

Also - they don't seem to publish actual HDD specs.
Is the Premiere standard 45HD Hour HDD any bigger than the one in the 4 tuner P4?
It doesn't make a ton of difference - we usually record and delete right away - and if it gets too full, transfer shows over and move into iTunes to watch on AppleTV3 at our leisure.

The standard Premiere is now the 500GB Premiere or 75 hours. The P4 has the 500GB drive also and the 4XL has the 2TB drive.

I believe you can add the warranty even on third party sales. Amazon has the p4 for $234.57 so it might be cheaper depending on shipping since usually with TiVo you have to pay shipping.

Yeah I think you can add the warranty after the fact. So Amazon is probably cheaper, unless you're in one of the states where they started charging taxes.

If the model number is TCD746320, it's a Premiere with a 320GB hard drive.

If the number is 746500, it's the same machine with a 500GB drive.

If the number is 748000, it's the Premiere XL, and has a 1TB

There have been recent offers from TiVo, trying to clear out their old stock of 320GB Premieres, of the unit and a lifetime sub for a total of $399 (I think they're doing that as $99 for the unit and $300 for the subscription)

And you can use jmfs to replace the internal with a 2TB drive.

That's the standard price (if you already have a Tivo).

What is totally UNCLEAR is - if you buy your new box outside of Tivoland - do you still get your $100 discount off of Lifetime? Assuming that you can also add in the warranty as well then - a good idea IMHO.

After my Series 3 died last weekend, I purchased am XL4 at the local Best Buy- added the $399 lifetime service and 3 year warranty from the TIVO website.
So yes you still get the $100 discount on lifetime, and can add the warranty as well.

So is it merely dead or really most sincerely dead?

What are the symptoms and does it have PLS?

YES! Thank you - just the answer I was hoping for. So find your best deal on new hardware and go from there.

$218 (Which gets a Life box down to $658) Shipped for a P4 seems to be the best thing going out there right now...unless someone else has found a better one - do tell!

That should be a sign to stay away from that company because they obviously don't know what the heck they're selling.

They mean that by attaching a DVD recorder you can record programming directly to DVDs. But it is poorly worded.

It doesn't sound like that to me. There was, at one time, a few models of TiVos with built in DVD recorders. Sounds to me like they copied the wording from one of them and forgot to remove that line.

And if you're right then that's a really stupid thing to advertise in the features of a TiVo, since a DVD recorder can be connected to anything with an analog output to create a DVD.

Get 6% cash back on the Tivo unit itself using www.topcashback.com and buying from solid signal = $12.60

PLUS

Get 2.5% to 4% cash back on Tivo Plan at www.lootzi.com = $16.00

That's another $18.60 back in your pocket!

It's only mostly dead..

The hard drive went out and I ordered a new 1TB drive from Weaknees and replaced the bad drive. Since I really wanted the XL4, it gave me a perfect reason to replace the Series 3. I was able to turn in one cable card to Time Warner, and I am selling the Series 3 with lifetime on e-bay with an upgraded HDD...Win win as far as I am concerned!
