Newbee Need Direction

I have 2 old Directv HR10-250 units that I bought years ago to use with my Directv service, After upgrading to full HD boxes It has been sometime now that they were stored in a closet and forgot about. I cleaned out the closet and found them and was wondering if I could turn them into a DVR for the kids.

I want to put a bunch of SD video files on the harddrive in it that i have on my computer that the kids like to watch and set it up in the TV room for them. This way they can turn it on and pull up the files and watch them while staying out of the computer.

So basically I want to turn them into personal DVR's for them that I can control the videos on them. I don't need to to hook any service up to them, I just want them to play the videos I put on them.

I've looked around in here and I'm not sure I'm looking in the right place. If someone could point me to a thread that discusses this I would be most appreciated. I am pretty computer savvy and always like to learn new things.

Again, I own the receivers and will not steal any services, I just want to keep the kids happy and the wife too, I was thinking about buying a media player but since I have the Tivo's here I would like to save the money for the braces I have to put on the youngest. There not cheap and every dollar counts.

Thanks again

I don't know of any way that you can load up your own video files onto an HR10-250.

Sony SAT-T60 120GB (v3.5b)
HR20-700, HR20-100, HR21-200 HD DVR
HR10-250 HD DVR 400GB (v6.4a)
H21-200 HD Receiver
R10 DVR 160GB (v6.4a)

Yes, it is possible if you "hack" the box and add a supported USB network adapter (the latter is increasingly hard to find nowadays.) The Underground section of the forum has more info on this.
