The Leftovers - "Solace for Tired Feet" 8/10/2014

Loved this episode.

Wondered out loud what it was that he needed to buy for his son..

Am I the only one who went online to search for the May 1972 issue? I found it and started reading one of the articles. There's a part where a guy hears some noise and is worried about some wild dangerous animal, but then is relieved that it's only a big moose.

My name was written on the front of the refrigerator!! Jeff K!!! My ego is big enough to have me hoping that Damon was reading all of the Lost threads here and wanted to thank me in some small way for my threads of praise. ;D

I love the balance on that excruciatingly thin line between "is this something supernatural going on, or something more mundane!" on multiple things in this episode. Every conversation with the father is like that.. Is it more interesting that he's just crazy and that people are on the edge of actually believing him, or is it more interesting if the voices he hears are actually something real? Is it more interesting if the multiple pregnant Asian chicks are all just victims of a cult, or if there's actually something to the Bridge?

The scene where the son finds the 2nd Asian girl had me thinking that HE was completely disillusioned by it (damn, there's nothing special about this guy, he's just really into Asian girls and f*cked a bunch of them since he could), yet there's still a ton of room for that to actually be a huge event, and the Bridge to be a main story point. It's certainly highlighted by the end of the episode with her in the bathtub with her new girl!

This is your invitation.

You KNOW this is real, which makes you a coward!

I love how they interrupted the Dad right when he was about to answer why he wanted to drug the dog. He HAD a good answer and started to say it, and then...

Great episode. I now love that this show started out slow.

One more thing - I like a LOT of the characters on the show (which I certainly can't say for many of the shows I'm trying to stomach now). I really like the main character cop. I now like his daughter way more than I did (and I even like her friend so far). I like his Dad a lot. I like the priest. I LOVE the woman who lost her whole family. I now even like the main guy's son (who is escorting the Asian chick). Man, gotta start learning some of these names.

I'm enjoying the show and I thought that the episode was entertaining. I'm glad the chief and Nora finally hooked up. But I do dislike the too often overused plot device of having a character wake up confused after sleeping or being drugged or going crazy to realize that they said and did a bunch of things that they cannot remember.

I also find myself wanting more of an explanation about why the police chief's wife joined the cigarette smoking cult. After all she didn't lose anyone in her own family including a husband and two children so why did she fall apart like that?

And they really haven't explained the back story of why and how the police chief's step-son got started working for Wayne the guy who supposedly takes people's pain away. I mentioned this in another thread about the last episode but I can't help but think about Spock's half-brother Sybok from Star Trek V every time they talk about Wayne's ability to take people's mental anguish away.

I still despise the cigarette smoking cult in general for the thieving lunatics they are. I'm happy every time the other characters on the show treat them badly or thwart them.

Yeah that hose was great.

I almost think we should have a whiteboard where we're keeping track of things we know about the show so we can see all of the jigsaw puzzle pieces in front of us.

Examples:

* Dogs now hate the main character cop

* Dog-shooting guy isn't on same "side" as dogs

* Crazy dad mentions the three-year time as significant

* Wayne's cult mentions the three-year time as significant

* White-shirt cult signs say "Don't Save Them" now. Who is the them? Everyone else? Yet they want them all to remember for some reason?

* We seem to have the closest thing to "proof" that Wayne can actually take people's pain from Nora changing last week (but then again, she paid $1000 already, enhancing it if it's just a trick). Still don't *know* if there's anything there.

* Cop and his daughter saw dog-shooting guy, as did a bunch of people in a town meeting.

Ok note to self - here are the characters names (names from imdb, comments from me):

Kevin - main character
Laurie - his ex-wife (now white shirt)
Jill - Kevin's daughter
Tom - Kevin's son
Matt - the priest
Nora - her whole family departed
Dean - dog shooting guy
Wayne - cult leader who takes pain away with hugs

Others:
Adam and Scott are the two twins that hang around Jill

Other misc items :

1) what was "our" Asian girl saying while dreaming this episode? (Remember, someone else already had a premonition dream about her with the human-action-figures on the street). We've seen that dream premonitions can be real.

2) Kevin's dream about the dog in the mailbox - was that the same dog he has chained up now?

3) two mailboxes in this episode. What are they supposed to symbolize?

4) Did Kevin's father (Kevin Senior) really just happen upon the kids in the woods right when his daughter needed help? Did voices tell him to do that?

From the reddit thread, here's the cover of the National Geographic issue:

Highslide JS

(I found the articles for free on ngm.com btw).

As said on that thread, one of the titles of the articles is "The Spider that Lives Underwater". Apparently that was some of what Asian girl said in her dream? So that ties Wayne's cult with Kevin Sr, possibly validating both.

There were several call backs to the front cover in this episode

the chick the chiefs son is guarding mumbled about spiders underwater in her delerium and spiders are mentioned in that issue.

Cairo went over the walkie-talkie in the chiefs dream

The Minoan Riddle refers to the Minoans civilization disappearing without a good explaination like the Departed.

Wayne seemed different obviously (asking Tom if he f*cked the girl.. damn it what's her name).. I wonder if by taking away people's pain, he's collecting it all, and it affects him? Did he give that to the babies?

Also from the reddit thread: note that Tom (who I guess is only Kevin's step-son, not direct son?) smashed a cell phone, and so did Kevin. Tom saw a mailbox, so did Kevin (I'd noticed the two mailboxes but hadn't focused on the father/son similarity part). Tom got shot in the hand, and the reddit thread says that Kevin got his hand hurt too? Oh yeah obviously - the one that Aimee helped bandage up during one of his blackouts..

I really like this episode too.

I didn't know that the father/son did similar things. I noticed the mail box but not the hand and cell phone smashing.

Do you think Kevin will start to hear voices? Or maybe even see them? Do you think it's God's angels? I wouldn't think so, but the daughter being saved from the frig by the grandfather is interesting.

The priest has a bunch of people working on signs to save the GR. The GR have signs saying don't save "them."

Did Kevin's hand look like it was bitten by a person? Looked like human teeth marks to me.

Aimee still seems sort of stalky when it comes to Kevin. I think she is pursuing him. I am worried about what happens during his blackouts that Aimee remembers but he doesn't.

The NG issues is interesting. I'd like to see how it connects with the story.

Unless I am mis-reading you...

I thought - Those signs are not the work of the White-shirts, I thought they were put up by someone anti-white-shirt which is why the White-shirts were taking them down.

There was a scene where we saw who had made the signs but I was falling in and out of sleep and don't recall when that happened now.

Reverend Matt and his group were printing those up in the living room of his house which was shown in the background when the police chief came by looking for him and that woman let him in the door.

Right but the Guilty Remnant then took those torn-down posters and made new hand-held versions from those with "Don't" on them.

Wasn't clear. But now *I'm* tired.

I just deleted this thing from my to-be-watched list. Tired of watching a show that doesn't make any sense and gives me a headache.

My first reaction on viewing was that it looked more human than canine (seemed rounder to me -- more like a persons jaw teeth, than a narrower dogs)

I posed a question last week whether Kevin would sleep with Nora or Aimee first. APPEARS that Nora is the winner, but given that whole blackout, and the weird Aimee vibe, still wouldn't surprise me if something happened there.

And given her "I'm surprised you didn't wake up" to Jill, wondering if perhaps Aimee gave her one of Kevin's sleeping pills.

That whole dream sequence and waking up was weird -- definitely don't know what all of that was about...

I'm sure that from a safety standpoint, they couldn't have a dog bite his hand. They probably just used one of the grips to make those marks, so it's going to look like a human bite, even if in the story it's supposed to be a dog bite.

They could very easily make it look like a dog bite. I thought it looked more like a human bite. I figured it was on purpose but with any TV show or movie you just never know. Since there are so many inconsistencies with every TV show and movie out there.

Well I respectfully disagree with most of you here. This show is going nowhere fast, and I think that was my last episode. I'm almost disappointed that they threw in a couple of really good episodes among the mostly long winded drifting storyline. Those two episodes kept me watching but now 2 bad one in a row. I find myself within 15 minutes grabbing my tablet and doing other things while this is on. I just don't care about these people anymore.

Wow, Steveknj... I am at the opposite end. I thought the last two episodes were excellent and broke the oppressively depressing tone of some of the early episodes.

As for the dogs, I'm not getting the comment about the dogs hating the cop. Many dogs have gone feral according to earlier episodes, and they aren't sure why. That's why they go out shooting them, because it's basically dangerous, wild packs of dogs roaming the town.

Everytime they have a commercial for this show and they say "the highly talked about...Leftovers", I always laugh because everbody I know does talk about it....but we talk about how we all can't figure out if we love or hate the show but we need 1 more episode to find out....LOL

I agree with Steven that the last 2 episodes have not been all that good. But I do enjoy this show for the most part. Enough to keep watching anyway. It's something different and I like the cast.

I'm going to backtrack and say I'll probably watch until the end of the season and see if there's some reason to watch next season, since it's been renewed.

I will say I'm looking forward to Boardwalk Empire where the pace is much more frenetic
