TiVo awarded patent for "motion-activated remote control backlight"

United States Patent no. 8,432,264, issued on April 30, was assigned to TiVo Inc. (Alviso, Calif.).
"Motion-activated remote control backlight" was invented by Roger Hsu (Palo Alto, Calif.). According to the abstract released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An apparatus for performing remote control operations is provided. A remote control detects a particular movement, and performs operations based on the detected movement."
The patent was filed on July 23, 2010, under Application No. 12/842,904.

Do they also make DVRs? I'm guessing not, as that is clearly indicated in the link.

So how come I have a harmony remote older than 2010 that already has a motion activated backlight?

Motion-activated backlighting has been a feature on high end remotes for at least 7 or 8 years. I believe my old Marantz RC2000 MK II had it. It was either on that one or my Home Theater Master MX-700, both of which I've had for at least that long.

The backlight is only one minor aspect of the patent. If you read the link you can see that it covers more ground than that.

A better summary would be, "A remote detects a particular movement, and performs operations based on the detected movement."

I believe there's already an app that lets you use an X-Box Kinect sensor to control Windows Media Center on a PC.
