Once Upon a Time - OAD 11/4 S2E06 - "Tallahassee"

This episode was much more interesting, lots of things going on. Although I didn't remember the postcard from the last episode, apparently it was shown...

obvious question about August's box.. wasn't it a typewriter?

I also tried to see if the volks beetle license plate was a clue... couldn't tell

red room dream with Henry and Sleeping Beauty, any thoughts?

this episode held my attention, even though i feel some of the acting was kind of weak.

When Hook was trapped in the "cave" toward the end, did Emma shout "August" - or was that my imagination?

I liked the subtle shout out to 'Lost' with the 'Apollo' candy bar at the convenience store.

The postcard was in the first episode this season, delivered by carrier pigeon or whatever. It just said "Broken".

I thought Jorge Garcia was horrible. His "act like a giant" routine was fine, but it almost seemed like he broke character when he was "trapped". Also, probly 100% of that giant's castle scene was filmed with green screen... it's hard to act like whoever/whatever is there when there's nothing there.

I discussed the August & Neal scene with a cow-orker who has been reading OUaT off-site discussion boards, and they're pretty convinced who Neal is. The problem I had with the motorcycle scene is that there are two possibilities: 1) Neal is from FTL and like August remembers that land, and 2) Neal is a non-magical human. I can't see it being 1), because Neal obviously didn't believe in magic. So if it's 2), what could August possibly show him that would convince him that August is telling the truth?? Perhaps Neal is from FTL and somehow had his FTL memory erased, but wouldn't there have been more revelation than "OK, I believe you"?

For completeness, the intarwebs are pretty sure that baby-daddy Neal is
Spoiler:
Bael. Ain't THAT a kick in the head? It makes complete sense: it ties a lot of pieces of the story-web together AND mucks with the allegiances of various characters.

interestng theory , i guess i wasn't thinking in that vein.. and i truly wasn't thinking well at all during the alley scene abut Neal. I did notice that Neal never said he didn't believe, just that he said "no, but i gather you do" to August.

I never watched Lost so all the references and garcia... zoom.. over my head.

I assumed this was the case since last year.

Actually, I think you're right: he never denied it, but never admitted he might believe. I know August knew who Emma was, but how would he know anything about Neal?

Also, what's with Tallahasse? Lock's dad is from there and Henry's mom wants to go there really bad.

It's where she pointed on the map. She still may get there.

Here's my take: as almost always with OUAT,it's the "real" world scenes that are the most compelling. The back story of Emma held my interest, while the Fairyland tales generally didn't.

Just sayin'.....

Also the reference to Phuket.

The Emma in the real world flashbacks felt just like a Lost flashback.

From Regina's quote last year ("place Emma stayed the longest"), Emma did make it there. Probably she moved there right after prison, looking for her ex. Probably where she started her job as a bounty hunter.

I think you're right on the money, but since we haven't seen it yet, there's always the chance of Alternate Timeline, Magical Time-Travel Spell, or my favorite: Writers Conveniently Forget What They Told Us Last Season.

Did anyone else think that Emma looked much prettier with glasses and her hair pulled back in a ponytail?

I thought he just showed him evidence that she was pregnant. They hinted at, but didn't make explicit, that it was evidence of magic.

I didn't think prettier...I was just amused at how they tried to make an actress who if anything looks older than she is at 30-something look like a teenager.

It's always entertaining to watch them youngify an actor. It seems we've had more shows than normal doing it this season. Everything from different hair, glasses, clothes, extreme makeup, even vaseline lens.

I didn't think this was a particularly effective case, but I got their message.

Ok, youngify™ I get, but what is 'vaseline lens'?

A slightly blurry filter that makes age-lines vanish. You can do it on the cheap by carefully smearing vaseline on the lense.

Moonlighting used to use it poorly, they'd have a conversation between Dave and Maddie and you'd see Bruce Willis crystal clear and then they show Cybill Shepard blurry, it was always very obvious and frustrating.

This was egregiously noticeable when I started watching Boston Legal in HD as well.

Candace Bergen's closeups were rather blurry while everyone else's were clear.

At least with HD you can see how it could creep in, I'm talking 1980's in SD on CRTs and it was obvious and poorly handled.

It's too bad because if they handle it smartly it's not obvious and there are plenty of instances where it's done lightly for an actress and not her male co-stars, but it doesn't stick out, I am convinced that in most cases it's folks that are old school film-based.

I said to my wife, "So a ponytail and glasses makes you look younger, eh?" and she said, "The glasses hide her wrinkles." I thought that was a pretty good point.

In that case, it's called "soft focus" and it's been a pretty common technique when filming older actresses for a long, long time. In fact, last week's episode of OUAT used it pretty blatantly in the scenes when Regina was working with Rumplestiltskin and was supposed to be the young girl that had just lost her fiance. It was especially bad in the scene where the Mad Hatter showed up.
