Problem - Windows 7 / Media Player - Video playback out of sync with audio

The audio and video playback of many, if not all, of the videos that Tivo Desktop downloads to my Windows 7 PC are out of sync.

I have searched several threads for an 'easy' answer, but I have not found one.

Is there a step-by-step guide to check for mpeg codecs and upgrades?

Is there a better playback application other than windows media player?

I am running Tivo Desktop V2.8.2.

Here are some support details from Windows Media Player:

From your codec listing it looks like you have Desktop Plus. At least the MainConcept MPEG-2 decoder listed is the one that comes with Plus. If you do have the Plus upgrade Desktop will automatically use the Plus codecs (mostly from MainConcept) and it should work fine.

If you look at the sticky at the top of the Home Media forum, you can download TDCM and use it to see what codecs your computer is using to play .TiVo files. Just open a file and it will show you the entire filter graph. It will also let you select preferred codecs for playing .TiVo files if the default choices don't work for you.

Any video player that uses DirectShow codecs should work. VLC is a popular player but it doesn't use DirectShow and can't decrypt .TiVo files. You can use kmttg to decrypt them into straight MPEG if you want to go that route. Media Player works fine for me.

I've tried like hell to get them to play directly in Media Center, but no luck so far.

It could also be a corrupted timestamp issue in the actual files. If that's the case the only solution is to run them through the QuickStream Fix utility in VideoReDo first. You can get a 15-day free trial of VideoReDo on their site to see if that fixes it.

Drop Tivo desktop. Use kmttg to download and decrypt to standard mpg files and have it run quick stream fix. Audio/video sync failures are comment at commercial interruption points. QSF gets rid of those glitches in the sync.

Once you have standard mpg files, many more players, and those on other devices will play the files fine. They can also be easily converted to mp4 files for use on media players, android and ios devices etc. Smaller file size is nice too.

To reemphasize, get rid of tivo desktop. Its very poorly written software and will continue to cause you problems.

Bolt with 2TB drive along with a Roamio, a Premiere and a mini. OTA. kmttg, pyTivo, running with a 78TB Synology 1511 NAS....serving up the world.
